** Anime/Manga/Visual Novel SOURCE PIC LOOKUP TOOLS **
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:47:42 pm »

Before you post a thread just to have a picture's source identified,
look them up in Saucenao, IQDB, and ASCII2D first.

these tools are pretty straightforward, just copy the URL of the picture you want IDed and paste them in the box marked with URL.
if the site returns an error, download the image and upload it to one of these.

For Firefox and Chrome, there's an addon called Image Search Options FIREFOX/CHROME
by Xamayon that uses all these sites (and more).

Drop him some contribution here if you want, lol

for Chrome, there's the IQDB Context plugin, though it only uses IQDB.
(note: chrome addons also work in Chromium, SRWare Iron and other browsers using Chromium codebase)

for Opera  and other obscure browsers, Saucenao and IQDB has bookmarklets.
make a new bookmark and copy paste the code in the Monospace text to the URL.
to use, open the image you want to look up in a new tab and click the bookmarklet.
it should open a new tab with the results.

(note: found them via google, i didn't make the bookmarklets themselves, but i modified the saucenao one)

  • IQDB
    javascript:void(window.open('http://iqdb.hanyuu.net/?url='%20+%20encodeURIComponent(document.URL)));

  • Saucenao
    javascript:void(window.open('http://saucenao.com/search.php?url='%20+%20encodeURIComponent(document.URL)));

while Tineye works quite well for finding larger versions of pictures, the sites it crawl usually have zero information
about the images themselves. Saucenao, IQDB, ASCII2D, all crawl sites dedicated to anime/manga/VN like Pixiv,
Danbooru, Konachan, e-Shuushuu, and others. which have detailed information about the pictures in their repository.

Wouldn't this be more appropriate in General Discussions?
Anyway, thanks for the share. I didn't know of any way to reverse-search images except TinEye.

lol, not really. https://chrome.google.com/extensions/search?itemlang=&q=iqdb (date retrieved: 4/30/2011 gmt+8)

though the first is just IQDB and the second is probably just for 4chan.

Wow that's really cool. It's kind of nice to have this information. I never really looked at any Add On's for Firefox before. Thanks for the information Kyrdua. :D

Only on 4chan though.

edit:
Would be nice if you could update the first post to be a more general info post for both Firefox and Chrome (and any other browser that has an extension that does this). I added a small note to the read before posting rules to try a reverse image searcher (link to this thread) before posting a new thread about image identifications.

If an image is cropped what I'll usually do is Google Image Search because it will usually find the full image as well, even if it doesn't find a high resolution version, then I can search the full size one on IQDB since IQDB doesn't seem to play nice with cropped/altered stuff...

I don't think that's in add-on by default though, so here's the settings if you need to add it...

Display Options
Code: [Select]
Google Image

Sub-Menu ->
Code: [Select]
http://www.google.com/favicon.ico

Left Click Settings
Code: [Select]
https://www.google.com/searchbyimage

Right Click Settings
Code: [Select]
https://www.google.com/searchbyimage/upload

Variables (left)
Code: [Select]
image_url=::$URL::

Variables (right)
Code: [Select]
encoded_image=::$IMGDATA::

GET Var Markers (same)
Code: [Select]
? &

(left one = no check)

Right one:
  • Use POST instead of GET
edit: I changed the google image links to Canada's SSL version of the site since the US version is permanently censored.

edit: I changed them back to *.com since now even Canada's is censored.
