Night on the Galactic Railroad (BD vs DVD)

I recently obtained the Bluray of Galactic Railroad. I'm not sure if the bluray source warrants a 720p or 1080p release. Comparing bluray source to DVD source upscaled with Spline64.

As seen in both screenshots, the Bluray seems to have heavy film grain (which FastDegrain doesn't seem to be able to remove) Should I remove the grain during encoding for better compressibility and if so, which Avisynth filter can remove it?

Why would you ever remove real film grain like that?

Ok. Lesson thoroughly learnt.

I planned to do a new encode to replace the aging dual-audio encodes currently on tracker.

Correct me if I'm wrong Revo, but can I take that as you making a new encode from the Bluray?

You'd do a much better job that I would :P

I did encode DVD but I was not happy with it. So I will give it another try with bluray :)

Some people like to remove grain like firesledge and he does a good job doing it.
BUT even if he did not destroy any detail image still looks bitrate starved and too soft (that is just my opinion)

?

I haven’t released my NotGR encode yet! (waiting for decent French translation)

BTW, even if it's better than the DVD, the BD transfer is horribad so I won’t release anything greater than 720p.

I was talking about your other releases :)

I still have to look at it

There's a Night on the Galactic Railroad BD 720p encode on rutracker (t=4848409). It has 2.0 FLAC Japanese audio, Russian fandub audio, Russian styled softsubs, and PGS Japanese Blu-ray imagesubs. If anyone wants to remux to make it suitable for BakaBT, this could already be used as the base encode.

Perhaps, encoders are waiting for US-BD release by Discotek this year which would probably include a faithful translation unlike crappy Dub-titles which are floating around the net & a much higher quality audio of English Dub, I suppose?
I don't think Discotek will include the 日本語字幕, though. :P

Hmm, it seems that Anonymoose did a 1080p encode, but I doubt the movie is worth 1080p...

post encode but obvious detail loss from downscale at edges and grain + smaller frame for mod2 crop

Sorry for the really late response.

I appreciate Anonymoose doing this. I think you guys are a really cool group.
But 18 gigs for one movie is too big for me, plus I'd rather just have a 720p encode anyways.
Is there any chance you guys will do a 720p release?
I just watched this and need an upgrade from Blu-Dragon's release, hehe... ;)

And Shreevatsa, it's true that the subs are dubtitles, but they're really not that bad -- and this is coming from someone who can't stand dubtitles normally. ;)
The English dub for this movie was quite faithful to the original Japanese, so the subs are actually pretty good.
Of course, the English VobSubs do have classic mediocre retail-DVD timing. But they're still quite watchable.
