Music with French lyrics
« on: July 13, 2015, 04:42:33 pm »
The genre could be absolutely anything, I'd just like to know of particularly good songs in French. Of course, this would all be a matter of your own personal opinion--and that's fine.

The reason would be that I don't have many chances to hear spoken French, and music requires the least effort to begin listening (not quite dedicated enough to start watching French videos). To that extent, I suppose songs with very clear lyrics would be best, but I don't wish to constrain suggestions.

If there's a really fantastic French song (or artist in general) please do tell!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akFZtK0GVU4 (phooooon <3)

i know this one too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiHWwKC8WjU

even though 1/3 of the song is danse danse danse, elle me dit
lol
dance dance dance, she told me! :^)

I'm a counter strike nerd but I recommend watching the VODs from pro french teams, where they can speak very relaxed such as in the warmup and it's less formal than some songs.

Nice, I quite like this one. I swear I know the tune from somewhere...
Edit: Oh, Ocean's 12

Mainstream isn't my forte, and chanson even less.

One of the very few songs I really like is William Sheller's Un homme heureux

Plain words, should be quite easy to decipher.
Who needs a signature anyway ?

I don't have much free time right now so I'll only give you an artist to look at for now:
Mc Solaar - Nouveau Western, Bouge de là, Solaar Pleure (Lower quality but with Eng subs), La Vie est Belle
He has lots of other great songs, just search for him on youtube if you want to hear more.
Also, I'm not sure how useful his songs would be for learning though, so that's more a rec concerning "fantastic French artist", as it might still be quite hard to learn from him I think, but he has really good/interesting lyrics.

Ahaha, I'm not using it for study material per se, I'd just like to get used to hearing French. I've always been terrible at [comprehending? hearing words in?] vocalised French.

I've always been terrible at [comprehending? hearing words in?] vocalised French.

That kind of issue usually comes from not understanding what you hear without translating it mentally, which gives you the erroneous impression everyone talks much too fast. Ran into the same problem when I dusted off my english. I still do miss some words here and there, but I generally understand enough on the first pass to fill in the blanks.

Speaking and understanding spoken foreign languages is essentially a matter of practice, until you get to the point you actually understand what you hear straight away instead of mentally translating it to your own language.

hmm, hmm

I like the Princess Tutu version better as it thematically fits the lyrics much more. Besides, Brotherhood deserves most praise it gets, while Princess Tutu doesn't get all the praise it deserves.

Ah I see. Then I'll just give you music I like. But most of them are oldish songs, since I didn't really kept up with French music... And mostly rap also.

Anyway, here goes:

Try Alizée. I'm pretty sure she's like the biggest French pop star there is. Practically like Brittney Spears over there. She even has that popular dance thing that she does.

live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6omsDyFNlk / music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=240S04eCCC0

I'm sure you can find plenty more by searching for her. Some of her stuff is English too, but it's much better in French. It actually sounds kinda dumb in the English versions.

However... if you're trying to understand the songs then listening to both versions (English / French) might make it considerably easier.

Indeed, I should have put more effort into French class. Four years down the drain. (Though high school foreign language study in the US, or at least in Florida, is a fucking joke)

Perfectly fine :>

I've also quite gotten into Louise Attaque. Nice sound.

lyrics are french, more strictly walloon (belgian french), only some words and pronounciation differ a bit from french

Les Discrets and Alcest are both excellent French artists, though the music style is black metal/shoegaze/post rock/ambient, so I'm not sure if that's up your alley.
