[Suggestion] Allowing raw anime to be uploaded
« on: December 11, 2015, 03:17:54 pm »
Hear me out before you shout at me, please.

There are an awful lot of series that were never subbed, and no one has plans to ever sub. These series are only available in raw format and the torrents are dying on nyaa and other places. Since BakaBT is an archive site, why not archive these too? I know of a lot of people who archive raws (myself included), and I think it'd be a great addition to the torrent pool.

Obviously there would have to be rules surrounding the raws accepted, such as how long do you wait before declaring a series forever unsubbed? Etc.

I can list many raw series I have on my HDDs that will never be subbed as examples, if needs be.

I was thinking about suggesting like this a long time ago but I figured that they'd say "you can just demux the subtitles" because I was about to suggest it for all anime torrents.

I second his suggestion. I also see a lot of torrents where there is only raw available. If BakaBT is the place to archive anime, why not also archive raw anime if no one ever plans to sub it or there isn't any english dubbed versions available? Maybe put those on slot R or something. However, when such raw exists in BBT and someone offered an english subbed torrent, the Raw torrent is automatically removed from the torrent pool and that subbed version is accepted provided that it is the best of all subbed releases through comparing, unless it is the only subbed series. This is to comply with the "anime torrents must be subbed in english" rule.

This is gonna be a problem to the staff. The no. of offers might go up again ;)

I doubt the problem will be serious. There aren't that many active uploaders on BakaBT to begin with.

My point was more in the direction of how many will be offered here. Just because you open the floodgates doesn't mean the valley will be flooded during a drought.

Same here. I know some others, such as Dmon and lanblade, have raws saved too.

The types of raws I'm thinking of would follow the existing BBT rules: the release with the best audio/video would be uploaded. Often there's only one release, so comparisons wouldn't be a problem. Accepting them shouldn't be a problem either, as you'd have nothing to compare it to in most cases and the few people who are interested in uploading them would just steadily work through what they have until everything is on BBT.

There are people who like tracking down obscure releases, and there will be people like that in the future, too. BBT is in it for the long run, and seeing these series disappear from the net is a sad thing to witness. So few people care about seeding on nyaa because there is no incentive or benefit like there is here, so what do they care if a torrent is unseeded as long as they have the files they want?

Users who think a raw series is a subbed series could learn to read a little better  why would you get complaints for doing something good?

I understand your concerns, but I believe the benefits outweigh any cons.

lololitas, think about all those raw hentais... :P

Though the idea itself, generally speaking, appeals to me personally also.

Upload it to Nyaa, Animebytes, or ADC/U2 (if DVDISO or BDMV)

Or create the thread about those raw need to get subbed which users, staffs or fansubbers can pick it up.

I think upload raw anime will destroy BakaBT's purpose/mission. IMO

I don't consider hentai rare at all tbh. The last thing on the internet to die will be porn.

Also hentai is more justifiable on this site, even with the current rules since you don't need the translation to... "understand" what's going on

Upload it to Nyaa, Animebytes
Check the number of dead torrents on both sites. Even rutracker is probably a better solution than Nyaa.

If this idea were to be approved, I have a few hundred titles I could offer (for around ~200 GB). And I think my collection's actually pretty small, hehe.

While I'm not an uploader, and I hardly every d/l raw content, I still think this is a pretty good idea, within the limits already suggested.  There's a LOT of stuff out there that never gets subbed/dubbed still; having a source for high-quality raws sounds like a good way to help fix that lack.  If nothing else, at least the content doesn't disappear forever.

I like the idea. A reliable raw repository is very much needed. I just hope this stuff will actually be seeded.

Considering the fact that I got 20-30 posts of hate for one torrent with .mka dub somehow I can't imagine how much people will take the bite and download raws while expecting subbed versions and shitpost about how hard is to see the [raw]/rawicon in the title. Be prepared for the rageposts, I'm outta here :shifty:
I can somehow understand raw hentai or kids shows where the dialogue isn't very important and quite simple in most cases, but raws are close to useless for something like Hyouka.
This will also alter the purpose of the tracker to achieve english subbed/dubbed anime, honestly how much of BBT's users actually understand Japanese: 1-2%?
With all these streaming services covering 90% of the shows nowadays, I assume that raws are mostly old shows with horrible quality, kids shows and hentai, right? I doubt that someone will bother to sub the first case and these are likely to stay raws and be ignored by the english speaking audience for all eternity, so making them available won't change their state (They're not my thing, but I'm not against them) and the later are "Meh, whatever", so they can benefit from some exception in the rules.

Can you provide some examples from these ~30 titles, because I've the bad feeling that I'm missing something?

I watched it with autotranslated English subs.

There are tons of probably cool titles that are still not subbed completely, or at all, or only have shitty unwatchable Hong Kong subs... Sequels to Ginga Senpuu Braiger, Ninku, Minky Momo, Hana no Ko Lun Lun, Konpeki no Kantai, second series of Mahoujin Guru Guru, Tanoshii Muumin Ikka, Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai, Fortune Quest TV series, Ochame na Futago, Ai Shite Night, OL Kaizou Kouza, Totsugeki Pappara-tai, etc. AFAIK most if not all of these are available in pretty decent quality. But who knows when these nyaa torrents will die. Now that webcast exists I hope more subbers will give some attention to older series, we just need to make sure that they can actually find them!

I'm kinda ambivalent here. On one hand preservation is a good thing, on the other we're talking about stuff that is currently still available yet no one bothers subbing.

Question is, is it actually worth the effort ?

It's not like BBT is overstaffed.
Who needs a signature anyway ?
