Gigabit 4G will page the way to 5G and it's arriving a lot sooner than you think
Smartphone use is transforming the way we all access information, but typically mobile network speeds have lagged behind those of wired broadband. Yesterday, though, Telstra launched the world's first commercially available gigabit 4G network, a move that signals a big shift from a world where we no longer need fixed-lines to get our high-speed internet fix, to ubiquitous, high-bandwidth, always-on mobile connections.

At an event in Sydney, Telstra's Mike Wright took to the stage to demonstrate the technology. Using Netgear's new Nighthawk M1 gigabit LTE mobile hotspot, he ran three live speed tests, achieving a staggering peak speed of 895Mbit/sec download and 97Mbits/sec upload.

“It's the largest ever step increase,” in the speed mobile download speed, said Wright, “and the first time we've done a big step increase on the uplink,” with peak bandwidth up to a maximum 150Mbits/sec for uploads.

What a fucking joke. Calling select areas in Sydney a "network"

By default, "network" is anything with more than 2-3 nodes :).

It's just that when you hear "launched the world's first commercially available gigabit 4G network" you'd think it would be available in a wider region.

That's it! I've come up with a new recipe!

Considering there's already one 5G running at Oulu, Finland and that we should have demo areas for 5G in the olympics in South Korea next year and Tokyo Olympics in 2020 should have fully functional 5G for the whole area, small scale applications of fast 4G networks seem rather pointless. Would much rather see wider area applications of fast 4G networks to fill the whole 5G networks are going to leave.

Because we can!

I'm more concerned about gradual phasing out of old networks than by creation of new ones. They turned out to be EXTREMALLY effective in terms of decreasing cockroach population .
