Title: Shin Megami Tensei
Post by: Lucerin Red on May 01, 2008, 04:10:11 PM
Soooo, I absolutely love any game from this series. But I'm creating this thread in honor of last weeks release of Persona 3: FES. Persona 3 was easily one of the best entries into the Shin Megami series, and the added features with the low price easily make this one a steal.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it's a unique RPG series that generally takes a darker turn. For example: in Persona 3, you shoot yourself in the head to activate your magic. The Shin Megami Universe features 19 games in various spinoff series and direct sequels.

Soooooo, does anyone else play any of these games? and if you don't but are interested, I suggest doing your best to buy up the games as quickly as you can after they are released, as the prices tend to sky rocket.

Persona 3 and Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne are my favorites if you're looking for one to try out.

I loved persona 3 and now im playing FES. The only thing that bugs me on this series is that Altus doesnt release enough copies of there titles. I know I was late buying persona 3, was playing wow at the time and not console games, so I had to buy it from a 3rd party. After playing it I was thinking of getting some of there other titles in this series like digital devil 1 and 2 and nocture but they arent aval anymore except at crazy prices. I dont really understand why they dont do like Final fantasy or whatever and make the games aval for years after release. People will still buy it. Espically poeple like me who just started playing this saga with persona 3. I mean persona 4 is promised to NA before the end of the year and im looking forward to that. FES is actually a really good deal since its both the original and the expansion for 30 bucks. They should just do another printing of some of there older titles, im sure poeple would buy them@@

The reason why is the series is just a little more popular then what they make, they wouldn't stand to make that much more by increasing production. Instead they could stand to lose a lot more if the series didn't sell through. It's a smart business decision that is aggravating to the consumer.

Love Atlus. Even though some of their games can often be hit or miss.

I really hope they gain some more spotlight attention though, would be really good for them and most likely would lead to them pressing more copies, which anyone that's tried to find a few older games knows is needed. -.-

Picked up Persona 3 FES and Nocturne last week at gamestop. Persona is downright amazing imo. I'm only abuoy 5-6 hours in though, been up a little past the 10th floor, but there's so much to do in the game. Just need to break away from it and play some Nocturne and find out what's up with the Dante cameo.

Respect to Atlus! They are RPG gods! I've completed Nocturne, it's a 1st class rpg, it's gameplay is prolly one of the best out there. It's story is so diffrent, which makes it intresting. It's a shame they don't build even more onto the plot in nocturne, it's not that the story is weak, it's just it does not achive a level of great depth.

Im currently playing persona 3, which is also an excellent rpg. Nocturnes gameplay is better (persona's allys are AI controlled which does not help the gameplay), but persona has such a great system and story line. I've never seen an rpg before that lets u live out that classic anime role: highschool superhero ;D It's really great fun and social links are a brillant idea. I just wish social links could have had an impact to which ending u get, since Nocturne had 6-7 endings all depending on what u choose (True demon all the way ;D).

It would also be cool if atlus payed more attention to the pal versions, since Nocturne was badly bugged at 50Hz. Oh and if they also included us pal players when they release stuff like Persona: FES in the future that would be nice :P Anyway, look forward people! Persona 4 is due to be released soon for PS2 and im deffinelty getting it!

It's amazing how many releases the PS2 is still getting, even though the PS3 has been out now how long? =p

Although they did release Disgaea 3 on PS3.

I dont understand why they are doing that, the PS2 could easily handle everything in Disgaea 3 and the market for a PS2 game is still much larger then the PS3 market.

Disgaea 3 does a lot of things with sprites that I seriously doubt the PS2 can handle.

Anyway, I've got every Megaten PS2 game except for Devil Summoner.  I'm about halfway through P3 and about 20 hours into Nocturne and can certainly say both kick ass.  Eventually I'll get around to cracking open the others, but it'll take a few years to get through all the PS2 games I've picked up.

Kick ass projects to keep an eye on:

The Innocent Sin project looks like it'll be released in the fall, so finally I'll get to try that one out.  I've been waiting to play that one before starting Eternal Punishment.

Soul Hackers is the one I really want to play, and I'd give your right testicle to do so in English.  Unfortunately it's been stuck at 20% for quite some time now.  I guess the best thing to do is hope that the rumored NA localization gets either a PSP release, or a PSX reprint gets included in Persona 4, ala Metal Gear Solid in the new compilation package.

Another one to try, if you have a Dreamcast, is Maken X.  It's a pretty cool little FPSlasher.  Just get the Japanese version, as the English version has some of the worst voice acting, and one of the worst subtitle translations, ever put in a game.  All of the menus are still in English, so the game is completely playable.  If you really need an English script, I'm sure there's a fan translation floating around somewhere.

well if you ever feel like a tactical side-scroller. odin sphere is the way to go. Good story line too that weaves together. and besides, there's alchemy for phosphorous. How more badass can you get?

Atlus games are my favorite. Gotta love the Odin Sphere.

Which is not really an Atlus game, it was developed by Vanilla Ware (and of course OS is the spiritual successor/sequel to Princess Crown)
