Title: Always keep up with your maintence on your motorcycle
Post by: limitedslip on October 02, 2008, 01:36:38 AM

The teeth on my sprocket decided to conspire against me, and break off an entire side all at once while I was on the highway. This caused the chain to fly off, bounce off the ground and hit my leg, and nearly caused me to fall...Luckily I was wearing jeans, it didn't cut the skin, but its all black and hurts like hell.

This is how it is supposed to look

Just keep this as a reminder to always be safe and double check vital points of your motorcycle before you decide to go for a ride.

question is is this something that could have been noticed had you checked it or was it a defective product

yea thats kinda what i was getting at, i dont know to much about motorcycles but at least for regular bikes the only time i ever needed a sprocket was when i bent mine, and it wasnt very easy to bend,  other then pure aesthetics reason or lighter parts ect.

Now high mileage bike i might think otherwise for a cycle but ide call the manufacturer about it and find out if its a common thing and what not. With a certain part number or what if there was a defect they might replace it for free EVERYONE LOVES FREE

how many miles were on that sprocket? The remaining teeth look pretty worn as well.

that very well could have happen purely from damage as a result of the 1 half of teeth breaking off the extra force on those teeth even if it makes a couple rotations but either way it is a valid question.

5k miles on the sprocket. It wore out much faster than I expected, I will no longer be buying vortex sprockets. They teeth were at about 50% wear before this happened, but not enough to cause the teeth to break off, when the chain ripped off, it ripped off chunks of the remaining teeth, which can be seen as now they look like toothpicks.

There really isn't a point on fighting them for a new one, as it only costs $60 for a new sprocket for my bike (needed a 50 tooth 520chain sprocket). Might as well just bite the bullet and get a new one.

Vortex seem to be aluminum...

5k on an aluminum sprocket?

I'm surprised they last that long, I'll stick with Steel.

I've never had a sprocket break on me.  I didn't even know you had to check that stuff for wear.  My last bike spontaneously combusted and went up in a huge bonfire, so obviously I don't know much about bike maintenance.

I'd like a steel sprocket...except for the fact that I did the 520 chain conversion and I am using an odd number of teeth from most bikes to increase acceleration. Not many brands offer the sprocket I need.

What kinda bike? small displacement I'm guessing if you had to after market upgrade to a 520.

Its a 2003 Yamaha R6s, so ya, its small displacement with a 600cc. I'm thinking I'm going to get a Renthal or an AFAM next.
