Title: So I made an app for processing manga for Kindle
Post by: FooSoft on December 15, 2008, 01:37:15 AM
Don't know if anyone here owns a Kindle but over the past week I've made a small application for preparing manga scans for the Kindle. I figured that it would be kind of a waste if I were the only person using it now that it's all done, so check it out. Feedback would be great too  ;D You can grab it at http://www.foosoft.net/mangle - I have a Windows executable but you can also build and run it under Linux.

I bet this will be a nifty application for kindle users.

I once saw someone reading manga on another, similar device, but the loading time for each page was quite long. Does the kindle take a long time to load each page too?

It depends. The loading itself seems to be kind of long (1-2 seconds) but Kindle pre-caches the next image. So if you are just flipping through images it's kind of slow, but if you actually read the panels then by the time you're done the next image has already been pre-loaded.

Wow nice work :) I like your code commenting. I see you're a game developer, that.. is.. kickass, and you live on the west coast. That must be awesome, I'm pursuing that path as well (though I'm far behind where you're at). Thanks for posting this, I don't own a Kindle but I'm sure it will be very useful.

Childhood.  Sigh, good times.

I was delusional a long time ago myself (video game programming).  I grew out of it.

It would do you better to learn RDBS, OpenSSL, AJAX, a couple .NET languages, and other technologies that a job you can get, live with, and make good money with ... will actually use.  ;)

But cool app.   I wish I thought of it first - but I don't got a kindle.  ;)

( Though, I do have a viewer for WM2003SE/5 [PocketPC] I made in C# for viewing webcomics - heh. )

i would totally buy a kindle if it werent so expensive

Get yourself a PocketPC.   Under $100 for one with a full color VGA screen.   600mhz Dell Axim x51v - what I got.   ( Though I paid a SHITLOAD more for it a while back.... )

Works great for webcomics [download an archive....] & viewing manga a half-page at a time.  If you can get a good one - you can even watch converted anime on it (in FULL COLOR, mind you.)

HAHA, that coming from a 29 year old (your age is correct in your profile?) Just how old do you think I am? I'd actually be flattered if you thought I was a child, although I do look younger than my age.

As for growing out of it, I'm growing into it :P I've already done enough web development with java, php, various databases, etc etc. BORING.

And .NET .. ..  just.. why.. (ok, it's not that bad I'll admit.. for business applictions)

As for actually using game development skills :-\ I don't know what to make of your comment. The education path required to truly excel as a game programmer is very useful in many fields, all of which are known to frequently pay 6-digit salaries (or more). Many aspiring game programmers don't even get into the field itself, instead applying their knowledge to more socially useful applications (I mean just how useful to society is game programming). In the end the reason I chose to pursue this path so late in the game is simple: I can settle for something I already know I can do, and be happy with it. Or, I can pursue the one path that will be perhaps the greatest challenge I'll ever face.

Sorry for the rant :) I mean no disrespect, I just couldn't resist.

edit: damn mah grammer sucks sometimes.

It's actually not that difficult to get into the game industry if that's what you want to do. And no, it doesn't necessarily require that much specialization. Get a BS degree and you're set. If you find out you want to do something else, you're still a computer programmer and can do all sorts of other software development.

Just to point out - the above post is bullshit.

At least in the UK.
