Title: Looking for an adult, interesting anime
Post by: THRILLHOUSE on August 07, 2010, 09:38:17 PM
I used to watch some anime back in high school and there are a few series that I really enjoyed (Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell, Serial Experiment Lain, Evangelion, some of Trigun, FLCL, Lupin III, and I love all of the Miyazaki films) but I haven't been able to find anything remotely as interesting to me as those. I've tried to watch other stuff (Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, K-On, Lucky Star, Full metal Panic and probably a bunch more I've forgotten) but a lot of it seemed kind of childish and lame and I wasn't able to get into it, no offense intended to fans of those shows. I've been study Japanese though and watching something like anime is a great way to get in a good mindset and work on vocab/pronunciation (to a limited extent) so I'd really like to have something to watch in my free time for the rest of August. If you guys could recommend something like the above mentioned shows that would be great. They don't necessarily have to be really dark or violent (although I don't mind that at all) but I want them to be legitimately interesting even to someone that's not that into anime. Cowboy Bebop is by far and away my favorite anime I've ever seen but I understand not everything can be like that. I tried to watch some Samurai Champloo but didn't really like it much.

Anyway it might sounds like I'm really jaded on anime but I'm sure there's plenty of great stuff out there waiting for me. Oh, and bonus points if it's really well animated. Thanks!

Tengen toppa gurren lagann is another amazing anime by gainax (FLCL and NGE)
also Kare Kano (again from Gainax, and master anno)
Black Lagoon and Requiem for the phantom are pretty amazing mafia/crime animes
you like action? drama? something in particular?

amm. . .Im trying to resist mentioning School days. . .cause its a highschool romance but its soooooooo not for kids so I wont mention School days. but I was thinking of mentioning it. . .

This time even I would mention School Days. The theme of it is so not for kids...

I just finished Crying Freeman. A six episode OVA (each ~50 min long). It's rather old ('86-'97) and the contents of each episode were kind of similar but I still enjoyed the OVAs.

Ergo Proxy Springs to mind straight away, adult storyline, well animated.

+1 Black Lagoon Pretty adult but doesn't take itself too seriously, good action with some drama and comedy moments.

Welcome to the NHK Really funny in places but pretty grown up.

Gilgamesh Quite dark and tbh it didn't grab me booboo, but worth a look

Darker than Black Good animation, story is adult(ish)

Monster A long one, but very highly rated, psychological drama.

Death Note Psychological again, not a barrel of laughs.

Baccano! Crazy madly good violent awesomeness.

Durarara!! By the same people that did Baccano!, not as violent, but decent.

+1 School Days Just because

I'll definitely check out Black Lagoon, Ergo Proxy and crying freeman since those look pretty interesting. I tried to find Tengen toppa gurren lagann, baccano!, and welcome to the NHK on here but I couldn't seem to find them. Are they not on this site or is it because I just recently registered (it says my browsing is limited for a few days)? They look really cool and I'd like to watch them but I'd prefer to download them from here if I can.

My roommate showed me a couple of episodes of Monster but I really didn't like it. As for school days, is that the one about that high school romance that
(click to show/hide)
? If so I sat through that and thought every episode was horrible except for the last one. Everyone kept saying it was really good and interesting but it just seemed like an overwrought tween romance fantasy?

Anyway, it doesn't have to be a dark drama that tries to be really heavy but just something that doesn't get bogged down in cliche. It can be a comedy (I forgot to mention I love crayon shin chan) but I really don't like the kind of comedy where it tries really hard to be cute (azumanga daioh comes to mind). Thanks for the suggestions though!

+Death Note
+TTGL
B Gata H Kei (it's rated PG-13 but...even if I had a 16-year-old kid, I would NEVER let them watch this)
-It's pretty funny, though. It's pretty much ABOUT ecchi, but they look at it in a whole different way. I thought it was quite interesting :3
High School of the Dead

+1 TTGL
+1 Ergo Proxy
+1 Baccano!

Code Geass is a good mix of genres, and has solid characters. The plot is solid and very clever(at least the first season)
Death Note Another clever plot series, this one is especially good if you sympathize with the character at least a little at first.

Might I also suggest the Rebirth of Evangelion movies (Evangelion 1.0: You are (Not) Alone, and Evangelion 2.0: You will (Not) Advance) because they do a really good job of retelling the Evangelion series. It's not complete yet, but at least thus far we're not headed for a mental breakdown ending. Some of the things are more coherent in there too.

Mushishi -  It's not violent or profane or anything...  It's just mature.  Also, it's episodic (similar to Cowboy Bebop)
