Title: It Looks Good On Paper
Post by: jaybug on September 21, 2010, 03:12:38 AM
In today's local paper, there is an article about how they want to redesign the roadway on campus. Roadway Redesign (http://registerguard.com/csp/cms/sites/web/news/cityregion/25292448-41/street-alder-east-parking-bike.csp) Gee, sounds nice, but when you look at it in terms of students coming to class, it just breaks down horribly. It won't surprise me if it gets built as is. Too bad the diagrams in the paper are not included in the on-line version, because it makes it easier to imagine how stupid this idea is. To have cars back up to park at an angle.

If you might be late to class, would you back up to let someone else get a parking space? If a bus was right behind you?

I guess bureaucrats have to come up with insane ideas to justify their positions and monies, eh?

And over here at work, they are making 1/2 the parking lot compact parking only. Compact meaning a Honda Civic fills the space, and any car larger is over the lines. That and they are raising the parking rates to $400 per year for employees to park.

I really hate these idiots. I mean I really hate these idiots.

They should read Elihu Goldratt (sp?) the goal...

"Resources working all the time isn't efficient at all"
and
"Saved costs are a mirage and lie"

(Somewhat paraphrased)

1. Doing stuff like this causes increased problems to the throughput. Issues like traffic concerns, lost productivity, opportunity cost etc. are lost.
2. Increased "revenue" generally comes with increased costs. Increased "productivity" doesn't equate to increased revenue if throughput is still failing.

Ooh, sounds interesting. I think I can remember a name like Elihayu Goldratt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eliyahu_M._Goldratt)

Yep. Same guy. I like how the idea is simple enough to be applied in general. Not just business, but other attributes as well. (Mainly projects)

I read today that in Portland, they have finally started building a new project that is mixed use: condos and retail shops. There are to be 54 condos of which 34 are of affordable housing. Affordable meaning someone making over 40k per year. I wonder, as it wasn't stated, how small the affordable units are.

I bet it comes with hunchbacked mice.
