Title: Any way to avoid ISP shaping/throttling?
Post by: Zin79 on November 25, 2010, 02:23:11 PM
Except for encryption and changing ISP?

Some torrent sites (maybe this one, haven't checked) have the option of downloading the torrent as a .txt file. if your ISP is actively blocking/slowing torrents this should work.

Wouldn't that be just the .torrent file you're talking about? The issue with ISP throttling relates to the Bittorrent-technology itself. One of the things I'd suggest is trying a different port than normal, as, if you're lucky, your ISP might only have throttled the traffic on standard bittorrent ports.

I am afraid encryption is the only way and it might still not be enough to prevent shaping. Your connection pattern can still be interpreted as a P2P activity.

Tunneling to a relay agent (which will handle all P2P connections) could be an option as it would be detected as "a single connection to a remote host" but the payload would still need be encrypted.

Alternative Options to Consider:
- Download to a remote server (on a different connection, not necessarily yours) and then FTP it to your computer
- Swap ISP
- Sue ISP
- Blow up ISP and then get a new one

How about - blow them up and then sue them as well...

Funny thing is, I get 450 kB/s in local trackers...I guess, my ISP has blocked the well-known trackers.
