Title: Webhost
Post by: Tatsujin on August 28, 2013, 02:06:31 AM
I've been with Netfirms for about 2 years now and now they want to charge over 100 USD for 1 year of hosting plan. Their server is a bit shitty, too. So I'm turning to you guys to give me some good hosting plans.

A 100$ a year is pretty close to the norm. You have places like dreamhost, asmallorange, hostgator is another big one and i think bluehost offers up some decent deals then the goto easy standard godaddy hosting

Well, the company I work for offers hosting for ~90USD/year, but in a good server :) It also depends on what do you actually need from the hosting (space, bandwidth), because I think some companies offer smaller plans for cheaper.

http://www.godaddy.com/hosting/web-hosting.aspx

Your choice, essentially pay $2.25/mo for 4 years then $6.99 after that if you want to renew again with justhost or do $3.99/$4.49/$7.49 for 12/24/36 months before it becomes $6.99/$8.99/$14.99 with GoDaddy.

GoDaddy you get a 100GB server. The other one it's supposedly "unlimited," http://www.justhost.com/unlimited-hosting

I'd take special note of the 3rd paragraph. "In accordance with our Terms of Services the disk space and bandwidth you use must be integrated into the normal operation of your website. "

And this one: " If we have concerns about your account's bandwidth or disk space utilization, you will receive an email asking you to reduce usage. Generally, we provide customers with a minimum of 48 hours to make adjustments before taking the account offline.

Again, the most common situations involve customers who use their accounts for storage of files—particularly multimedia files—that are not linked off of their websites. It is very rare for a customer who is managing a personal or small business website to exceed normal usage. "

Though apparently you can get a refund whenever you want if they piss you off: http://www.justhost.com/money-back-guarantee

It's hard to beat that deal though... $108 for 4 years of service compared to $47.88 for a single year or $95.76 for 2 years, at the cheapest rates at GoDaddy. So you're clearly getting a significantly cheaper deal at justhost.

What do you intend to do with your webserver? It's also worth noting that if you already have a seedbox that you could just pay for a domain and setup an apache server on your box and have no additional cost for a webhost since you could just use the server you're already paying for. Or you could use the IP rather than a domain if you didn't want any additional charges.

Oh fuck. Too late now. I bitch slapped Netfirms and they gave me 80 USD for a year. Next year I shall ask again.

Either you are quite lucky/scary/silver tongued if you managed to get them to reduce their price. Wish I had that skills. -__-

You should come on over to hostgator, they have unlimited database space (not a twist of the tongue like unlimited mysql or things like that) and they are supported by most webmasters.

Keep in mind that they have updated php to 5.3 so you'll have to upgrade your code as well.

Hosting recommendations depend a lot on what you want (or more accurately, need).

Are you hosting static content, or do you need dynamic language support?  If so, what languages?  Version requirements?  Any specific libraries need to be installed?  Do you need to run persistent processes?  Do you need shell access?  Do you need root?  Do you need click-through install wizards?  What operating systems are acceptable?  Do you need dedicated hardware?  What are your reliability requirements?  Are you hosting anything controversial?  What sort of bandwidth, storage, cpu cycles do you need?  What level of support do you need?  How quickly does support need to respond?

I use Github Pages (http://pages.github.com/) for static content, NearlyFreeSpeech (http://nearlyfreespeech.net) for DNS (and previously small PHP sites), and prgmr.com (http://prgmr.com/xen/) for my Python/Ruby/etc. stuff.
