Title: 2011 onward PC games
Post by: Tatsujin on September 25, 2013, 08:34:45 PM
Give them to me all. Mature games are welcomed. I've just started playing the Campaign for StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

I think I got Metro 2033.

Do you want to get to know games from 2011 onward, or do you want free games? I'll assume the former so:

If you're talking about "I just bought a new video card and would like some games to test it out" then you're probably going to be looking at a lot of things that also came out on consoles.

Crysis 3 too. And some upcoming games, but since I don't care that much about graphics I put out a lot of good games instead. Well the witcher 2 should look nice, and you can always play skyrim with mods

Bastion's a cross-platform game. Not sure it'd look or play any different on the PC than it would the consoles. Definitely worth having but not something the PC does particularly better.

Can agree with the Witcher 2 and Skyrim though, the PC versions do have significant advantages over the console versions. Also pretty sure Tatsu doesn't have a 360 to have played the Witcher 2 on consoles.

I only mentioned bastion as PC because that's where I played it and I didn't know on which platforms it was available. Played it with a PS3 controller though.

Metro: Last light?

Sleeping Dogs came out fairly recently, and happened to have a day 1 HD texture pack for the PC release. You missed a deal on it though; Amazon was bundling it with Tomb Raider and Hitman: whatever the newest one is for $15.

Played it with a PS3 controller though.
Likewise. I've never understood playing everything on a PC with a keyboard and mouse merely because that's the primary input method on the PC. The advantage of having a PC is that it supports all these things, why play a particular game with a less than optimal input method when I've got one more suited for it?

PC is just more powerful and easier to customize. Not all games are good on PC but these games are good on PC.

Went ahead and got few of those games. I already have some of them. I think Dishonored is on PC too, right? Is that a good game to play?

Dishonored was pretty good.

As long as your a fan of 'Thief' style games.

Saints Row 3
Saints Row 4
Skyrim
Mass Effect 3
Guild Wars 2
TERA

There's a lot more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I have heard Alan Wake is really good. If you like half life there is also Black Mesa.

Oh and by the way, if you haven't played any of the Mass Effect series I strongly suggest starting with the original then going to 2 before you start 3. You can actually carry over all of your decisions into each game so it's not a wasted effort.

I played 3, never played 2 or 1. 3 was awesome till the end ... WTF is that ending? TERRIBLE decision TERRIBLE! But the whole game was just full of epics.

Playing Tomb Raider, sucks I can't turn on TressFX otherwise I'll get 4-8 FPS a second! Her hair looks so damn real, but the gap between her hair and skin is annoying.

Oh you made a huge mistake starting with the 3rd... you missed so much and had so many decisions made for you. Go back and start with the first one then the 2nd and import your saves through each. The gameplay is vastly different depending on which choices you made in the previous games.

The first is a bit dated now but the engine and gameplay is alright even nowadays... the graphics are a little behind but it's still a good game.

For benchmark purposes: Metro 2033. It's one of the best looking and hardware demanding games for pc right now.

I'd be recommending games from the early 80's if you didn't specify 2011 and onwards. Anyway:

If you want pretty, just get Crysis (use high resolution texture packs) and Crysis 3. And Skyrim, of course. Remember to use SweetFX with them.

X-COM: Enemy Unknown is a good game. It's not exactly pretty, but it is a good game.

You played Human Revolution? No? Give it a go!

I can vouch for the Mass Effect series being entertaining. The first one can be a bit of slog if you already played through the 2nd and 3rd games, but it is worth it.

New Vegas is a great, buggy as shit game to play.

ARMA 3 is out. If you can, try it.

My brother won't shut up about Sleeping Dogs, so you may want to give that a try, too. He likes Hitman:Absolution, too.

Check out Mount & Blade: With Fire and Blade, too. Well, check them all out.

Touhou, too.  8) All of them.

If you like a challenge, you should try Long Live the Queen. I can never get her to survive. Never. I will beat it eventually. I swear it.

Rogue Legacy is a fun Rogue-lite platformer. Academagia is fun game, too. The demo is shit, and it isn't representative of the game unfortunately. It is still a fun little sim game.

Use high texture pack for Crysis? Enlighten me.

What is SweetFX?

I wasted so much time on long live the queen... Well I didn't really waste it since I enjoyed it and I actually got to the end, so it's doable. That said, the countless ways to die are the entertaining side of it ;)

SweetFX is a shader package. There's more than one though for Skyrim. Probably want to look around at your options (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/) though before you settle on one. There's a ridiculous amount of variations on ENB (another shader package.) They're usually used as injecters, you have a replacement D3D9x.dll and it injects various graphical features into the engine. And then it reads off a preset list how to configure them. Skyrim is one game you can easily spend more time modding than actually playing. And I say that having like 700+ hours on it. The modding possibilities are nuts.

It might almost be worth loading a save for Mass Effect and starting with the second. The first game was fun the first time through, but a chore on replays. There's also the goofy Genesis comic books that let you make most of the major choices by deciding in a voiced comic that plays before the start of the game. It's pay for DLC though... Could bootleg it and run it anyway if you wanted to I guess.

It is very fun. I know Tatsu is a VN fan, and while it's not quite that, it might be something he'd like. It's been Greenlit (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=142369710) just recently, so should be coming to Steam hopefully soon. Only improvement other than achievements and cards is ending graphics, which will definitely be nice in a game with so many ways to die.

He hasn't played the first though. It's definitely worth a play. There are save game generators out there but it'd be better to experience it.

SweetFX (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=368880) is shader suite as zherok has said. Its similar to ENBSeries, and you can use the two concurrently. I used to use it with Skyrim and PCSX2 when I had my computer.

Overclock got a whole thread devoting to modding Crysis 1. [56k Warning] (http://www.overclock.net/t/1014933/a-guide-to-crysis-mods-56k-warning) Most of Crysis 1's prettiness is in its shaders and particle effect.
