I recently discovered the Higurashi visual novels. After checking the wiki I saw that there is also an anime,a manga and a light novel about it.They are so many I have no idea where to start...Do all of them follow the same story or a different one?And is it any good to begin with?
-
The main Higurashi anime is good. The OVAs are pretty much all fanservice. If you watch them, you have to watch Higurashi no naku no koro ni first, then Higurashi no naku no koro ni kai second. After that, you can pretty much all the OVAs in whatever order you want. If you don't watch the anime, you should read the Visual Novel. And yes, they pretty much all follow the same story with little variations in each. The visual novel I think covers the most content, that is if you go through all the routes and get 100% completion.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I think I read somewhere that the visual novel has no voice acting(I also checked some of the files in it and found nothing).I like visual novels but I want some voice acting in it.It makes it better to me.Is it true?

In almost all cases, the best bet in situations like this is "watch them in the order in which they were released." That gives you the exact same experience as people who watched them when they came out.

Yep that sums it up :P.Still I was mostly interested in the content which seems to be the same for the anime, manga, light novel and visual novel.

Yea it's true the VN doesn't have voice acting and unless you use the ps2 sprite patch it doesn't look too good.
Original

vs ps2 sprites.

Saying that, i vastly preferred the VN since it has better atmosphere.
Oh and whatever you do NEVER WATCH THE LIVE ACTION MOVIE!!!!!!

I think I'll stick with the visual novel. The PS2 sprites are a lot better. Is there a way to use them on a PC version?

Higurashi was brilliant, and if you're after something similar give Umineko a try :D Same sort of vibe and aside from the annoying whine (that kid,"UUUUUUUUUUUU"), it was great.

Heard the anime was aufwl...I don't know if i'll give the VN a try.It has no voice acting to.I don't want spend about 150 hours just reading both Higurashi and Umineko. It's tiring.I might even switch to the anime since I cannot spend that much time on my PC and the PS2 sprites along with other fixes crash on android with VNDS :(

There is no such thing as an Umineko anime like there is no tsukihime anime if you know what i mean.

It's such crap compared to the VN that it not should be acknowledged.
For Umineko the best way to describe it the whole lord of the rings trilogy in less then an hour. Rushed and without any explenation on wtf is going on.
http://vndb.org/v24
Classified as very long which means over 50hours. Now tell me how you can make a 26episode anime which is Not even a 5th of that without destroying everything.

There is an Umineko Anime
DESPAIR!!!
-
You can't make one.I don't know if Umineko's chapters follow 8 different stories or all chapters make for for one story so my guess was the anime followed one of the stories or one chapter. Also, even though Higurashi was long enough I read that the anime was great compaired to Umineko.

Yea but that comparison has no point once you read what its about. Hugurashi had a lot of personality scenes to call them like that in the VN where you learn to know the characters better. You can make them shorter or even remove them without too much issues besides some character development.
Umineko however got a lot of very confusing terms and mechanics that they play around with that when not properly explained is total fucking bullshit and incomprehensible.
Oh and the unexisting show follows only 4 chapters and even that is totally impossible. 50hours was only for the first 4 chapters btw, you get another 50hour with the next 4chapters.
-
Remember there's the new higurashi thing coming out soon too. I think it's an anime, but I'm not sure, and I have no idea what form it'll take.
I only know about it because there was a huge billboard for it outside Shibuya station (overlooking the famous crossing), so other than the fact it's probably very high budget, I'm clueless.
EDIT: Ah, there was an animated movie that aired in august. I guess the billboard is for the bluray release. It looks like the story is quite different to the original.

you mean Higurashi outbreak?

I just hate it when they ruin good concepts like that...For Umineko I'll surely stick with the VN.

It seems that the new thing is an OVA http://myanimelist.net/anime/16700/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Kaku:_Outbreak (http://myanimelist.net/anime/16700/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Kaku:_Outbreak)

Ah, you're right - it is an OVA. It released in August though, so I wonder what the billboard I saw was advertising? I assumed it was just the bluray release, but if it was an OVA then that obviously happened months ago. Mysterious.
-
Perhaps a Blu-ray edition of an older release or maybe from the live action movie?
