Quadlazer:
I read this book:
But seriously...I've always wondered about working in a data center. Do you get the rackspace for free? (looks like there's enough room) Do you just pay for power and bandwidth? Is bandwidth discounted?
Or even monitored? ;)
I bet the home PC looks sweet too. 10TB of HD space?!?! :o :o :o

Alot of places are really cheap bastards so I would say getting free colo is decently rare.
For example we rent space from alchemy (most of our servers are in their two data centers and our NOC (where I work) is in their data center) and they (who actually own the building/space) will not give their employees rack-space (my friend worked for them). I do actually get free rack space/power/bandwidth (I don't pay anything for the colo) but it was limited to 1U and nothing to power hungry.
Just a couple days ago I emailed my boss (I am graveyard so I don't see other co-workers in person anymore) to see if I could put in a 2U server and use some more power. I would really like to get a redundant raid setup so I don't lose data if I lose a HD.
We use cisco layer-4 switches so bandwidth definitely is monitored but we recently added a 10 gige internap connection to the mix so we aren't really hurting for bandwidth right now. I try not to abuse it too bad and stay under what my monthly limit is if I was a regular customer (what my shared hosting would be) which is around 9TB/month.
As for my home system I actually made a thread about it when I upgraded 12 misc size drives totaling ~5TB to an 11TB redundant raid-5 array:

9TB of monthly traffic is nearing what I consider "unlimited". I had a TorrentFlux server running on a 100Mbit line (unmonitored), but got C&D's from the MPAA and had to shut it down. :-\
Yeah, so even if it is your work setup, which is kinda cheating for this thread, I declare you winner. Winner winner chicken dinner.
So is Dreamhost's Downtown LA location just management, tech support, and R&D? I was thinking about applying for a job down there. :P
houkouonchi:
I am currently One of only 3 people who work in the building where most of our servers are located in downtown L.A. We have another 20-30% of them in the LAX data center (literally where LAX airport is) and we don't have anyone there full time and people just make trips down there when we need to.
Most of the other L.A. employees work in a building that is less than 1 mile away from our data center and the admins that work there usually just take a quick trip to the data center if they need to do stuff. About 60% of the employees that work in L.A. are on the admin/developer team. Our other office in Brea is about 95% support people and a couple devs.
What is R&D?
