I LOVE Metal. And pretty much all it's sugenres, with my favorite being Symphonic Metal and my least favorite being Power Metal.

My favorite bands are Nightwish, Within Temptation, Therion, Silentium, Sirenia, Tristania... I would spend years listing them all.

I also don't like Heavy Metal itself too much (Iron Maiden, for example), but still listen to it every now and then. I'm always looking for new bands too.

My first post ITT, which is surprising because Heavy Metal and Melodeath are respectively my 2nd and 3rd favorite music genres.

My favorite metal bands include, in no particular order, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Amon Amarth, Dethklok, and In Flames.

Therion

I despise the term 'Symphonic Metal.' Let me illustrate my point.

Lets start with a band you know well. Didn't know about their Death/Doom phase right?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTonwsIdVP0

How about the originator?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgQRRI9goFg

Throw in some Folk...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXeK3M7O8_0

Awww hell lets toss in some White Supremacy in with that folk too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Bm_cNkt1g

And for my finalé, a classic of the genre.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXu8M6q6v84

The biggest irony being of course, the closest metal genre the bands you listed fall under would be Power metal :P (Personally, I label them Symphonic Rock as "Symphonic Metal" isn't a genre really due to issues illustrated above).

Therion
You should listen to Therion's Of Darkness..., Beyond Sanctorum & Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas. :3

How about the originator?

Combine all of Dimmu Borgir works into one & it still won't come close to what Emperor did in this masterpiece.

Just a stunning piece of music that honors both its influences and its culture. I'll have what they're drinking, please.

Want my honest opinion? Uninspiring, very monotonous, little variation in tempo and style is offered by this band; together with the drums an unholy unity of boredom is created; one reason why a band often tend to fail when it comers to this genre (depressive black metal).

I have listened to all the Therion albums. I actually own "Symphony Masses - Ho Drakon Ho Megas" and am aware of how the band started. Their latest album is bizarre and that makes me love it, but I love their Death Metal stuff as well. :)

Fair enough. Too often people talk about Therion as if they've always played that Nightwish-brand of music. I got nothing against peoples tastes but I'll try to amend misinformation wherever I can.

I'm looking for something new (to me) in the doom/death genre, along the lines of November's Doom, Draconian, October Tide, Daylight Dies, certain older My Dying Bride or Paradise Lost songs.  Anything like that -- semi-growled vocals, slow tempo, overall mournful sound.  Piano, violin, or other classical instruments would be fine, but not required.  The first 3 bands are of the biggest interest to me.  Anyone have any recommendations?

Amorphis' first two/three albums, particularly "Tales from a thousand lakes"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf4oCrIUixY

Sins of thy Beloved (Gothic Death/Doom)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWUmi-6_WUk

Visceral Evisceration
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgALTCvqZ4E

Mars De Grises
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZpcoL7FdAo

Maybe a touch more upbeat than you're after, otherwise I'll be reaching for Esoteric and Evoken which are more Funeral Doom...

Esoteric

Evoken
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eEPxYFYD4o

Bleh, not really my area I guess. Still, couple of ideas there perhaps.

I completely forgot about Amorphis’ older stuff, I’ll have to go back and give some of that a re-listen.  I’m a fan of later Amorphis, Elegy on, and kind of forgot about their doom/death roots.

Sins of thy Beloved (Gothic Death/Doom)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWUmi-6_WUk

Not really what I was looking for right now, but I do happen to have these guys on my list of Gothic bands to check out when I get in the mood for that sound again.  Reminds me a lot of Sirenia.

Visceral Evisceration
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgALTCvqZ4E

I liked some of the music, although the solos felt a bit stale.  I’m definitely not into gore in my metal, though, so I’m gonna give these guys a ‘pass’.

Mars De Grises
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZpcoL7FdAo

This I liked probably the best out of what you listed, again not quite what I was looking for, but something I’m going to give a closer listen to later.

In truth, I know nothing about Funeral Doom and have been kind of wanting to check some out for a while.  Just haven’t been sure where to start.  These 2 bands are definitely more experimental than I’m accustomed to, but they’re something I’ll likely give a closer look.

So, yeah, nothing exactly what I’m looking for right now, but there are a few interesting bands worth checking out.  Thanks for the ideas.

Funeral Doom's a weird one to get into. I've mostly stumbled into bands I like here; like I said, not really my forté, but I wasn't sure if it was anyone elses either. If you're on facebook, ask here:

You might get some better answers.

I'm aware, that comment wasn't towards the bands I posted, but rather when I went through this thread I saw a lot of bands that required digging to find.

Chaostar's Underworld >>> Septic flesh (Chaostar is Septic Flesh's dark ambient side project.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwL_OYWTmak

There's a couple there I might need to look into in more detail though...

For my offering, I've been digging King Goblin a fair bit of late. A sort of Experimental Doom, throwing in elements of Sludge, Stoner, Hard Rock, Psychedelic, 70s Prog and Free Jazz.
