Today I was introduced to Diablo Swing Orchestra. I can not believe I never heard them before. Jazz and Metal fused together made for a combo that I always wanted but never got, until today.

You introduced something that's so weird to me that I feel obligated to listen to it.

If you liked them, might be worth looking into Panzerballett (Jazz/Metal, though not Swing Jazz as in DSO), Akphaezya (???) and Alamaailman Vasarat (Avant-Jazz). DSO are pretty fun live though ^_^

Okay, I listened to that entire album by Diablo Swing Orchestra, and to be honest, I don't hear much metal.

It's Avant-Garde Metal. It uses metal as a base platform to launch from, incorporating a number of different styles. You don't hear much metal because there are so many other different styles and genres thrown in that it doesn't sound like any one thing in particular, and that's intentional.

It's weird, I don't like it, but I can't stop listening to it. Biggest mindfuck ever.
But, anyway, are you deaf?

EDIT: oh my god my ears are cumming buckets right now and it feels so good. And they're a Canadian band, too. I fucking love this, it's considered Thrash, but it almost sounds too old-school to be Thrash to me, omgofffgf my ears are still cumming.

Ever since I really got into UnExpect years ago, I always tried finding more avant-garde or anything jazzy, like Tessaract, that I really enjoyed (with low results). Definitely adding these to my library. I was really happy with Alamaailman Vasarat, exactly to my liking. Thank you.

Tesseract play mathcore, not avant-garde. But I can help with that too as I'm a big fan of the genre as well :P Easiest and non-spammiest way would be to just tell you to read this, it's a genre overview I wrote a few months back and I'm sure have probably posted here already, but eh. If you don't care for the genres origins, scroll down to the bottom and open the spoiler for a long list of various artists that have emerged in recent years. It's still a pretty recent development (maybe a decade old?) so has a long way to go before it starts gaining momentum.

Might also be worth looking into Jazzcore; Lye By Mistake is up there for their Jazz Fusion/Mathcore work, but there's also bands like Naked City who kinda started it all (ever heard of Sax shredding?), Deep Turtle and Midori. Sadly, this is one genre I've not turned up much for, doesn't seem to be a popular combination...

So I've fallen in love with Haken all over again. I've been following them since they were recording their first demo's, in contact with the bassist bothering him for details about when their debut would release, and when it came out last year I announced it as my album of 2010. Last month they unveiled their follow-up, and it's pretty damn close to the goodness of their debut. Heavy Prog like this hasn't been heard since Dream Theaters "Images and Words," the days of Rush, Porcupine Tree's peak, and it makes the Mars Volta look like amateurs.

Leprous' "Bilateral" is now a contender for my album of the year; "Extreme Progressive Metal" fits best as they've been compared to every prog name under the sun (Muse, Kalisia,  Haken, Opeth, Cynic, DTP, Porcupine Tree, PoS, Mars Volta, Mr. Bungle, Protest the Hero, etc, etc). They're themselves and that's no bad thing when they're this awesome. Formed by Ihsahn (Emperor, Peccatum) to be his backing band for his solo project, they began writing stuff together in their spare time and ended up with this.

Oh boy, I honestly can't tell you how much I like this band. I listened to Thorn and it pretty much sold me. The vocals are what draw me the most to this band.

Got anymore like these guys?

*ponders*

Kalisia? (If you missed this one, it literally defines "Epic;" took them 15 years to write, contains a philosophical and detailed concept story. Fuck they spent a year creating an "alien" language used in some of the lines. This is the LotR of prog metal...)

Gonin-Ish? (Short-lived "Extreme Prog" band, with bits of folk, thrash, black and death metal tossed in)

Dan Swano's "Moontower?" ("If Rush played Death Metal in the 70s" - Swano)

Ram-Zet? (Extreme Avant-Garde)

Arcturus? (Sort of futuristic, spacey symphonic black).

Kinda the problem with Avant-Garde is there's usually nothing else that sounds like them...

Oh man. I remember the days when I would listen to nothing but metal and more metal. Black Metal, Death Metal, Speed, Prog, Sludge, Grind and all those shit.

Got tired of it though and started to listen to house and trance instead, with the occasional ambient thrown in. I listen to Dragonforce once in a while as well just to feel mighty.

Didn't read the posts above me but I glanced the word Avant-Garde. Perhaps you guys might enjoy Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, <code>, Ved Buens Ende, In the woods..., Fleurety or Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses if they haven't been suggested.

Well it's not all metal but most of it is, so it fits better here than anywhere else. A month of trauling through all the albums I've listened to this year to come up with my end of year list.

Well, if you fancy a creative way to torture a violin, give At the Gates a shot  ;D
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

So I heard you like metal.
Forgive me if I'm just echoing bands other people have mentioned here, it's quite a long thread to go digging through.

ofc firstly my favourite band ever, Godflesh, heavy/industrial metal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkXKOadsf7g&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwGaLF9mDAE

Altar of Plagues, black/post-metal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy1Ob9RuPFY

Havok, thrash revival
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqTwturQIFY

Pitchshifter, industrial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiTPasDsI9M

Reverence, black/thrash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og5X3WjjYkA

Vektor, thrash/progressive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A64Tdl0f7Zk

Spektr, black
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki6-gPY86n4

But for the most part I just listen to regular mainstream metal, Rammstein, Burzum, Mastodon, Korn. Metal for non-metal heads some people say.
