I've been blasting these guys a lot lately.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt_wZFv8Q04 - Intronaut - Australopithecus

Technical, br00tal and jazzy at times. Dat jazz break @ 2:30 is awesome.

You can tell these guys definitely listened to Cynic.

I like Blood Has Been Shed and Intronaut. Latter a bit better perhaps :)

Today I was introduced to Diablo Swing Orchestra. I can not believe I never heard them before. Jazz and Metal fused together made for a combo that I always wanted but never got, until today.

Wow nice find, this is just cool. Metal you can dance to?

I'm not even sure how to classify this band as other than "grindcore" Definitely a new spin on the genre :D

I like the first song, will have to check out the others when I have more time.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

^ well metal is an extremely broad expression, so I guess its more up to you to decide what kind of metal it is I more or less hate categorizing music its dam near impossible.

Some of it can be, but an awful lot fits under quite neat genre terms. So long as you know the genres - Death, Doom, Trad, Sludge, Stoner, Black and so on - a cursory listen is usually enough to figure out where to place them. If you can do this the worst you can be accused of is being inaccurate rather than wrong. It does get more confusing when you consider descriptors - symphonic, VKei, Technical and so on - and the more intricate details of genre classification (was that Bestial Black Metal or Raw Blackened Thrash?) but by this stage you're getting pedantic and both would work fine. So long as it describes what they sound like, it's a winner. Example, Children of Bodom: Extreme Power Metal or Neo-classical Melodic Death Metal? Well, both fit, so pick one :P

Not sure how much you guys will like this, but
maudlin of the Well
I just found out about them a few days ago. Rather jazzy prog metal (Wikipedia calls it avant-garde metal, but that's quite broad).

Sample: Birth Pains of Astral Projection (first 3 mins are intro)

They work better if you listen to the whole album in one go. I recommend their albums Bath, and Leaving Your Body Map. Particularly Bath.

Also they have a more recent album called Part the Second, which isn't metal but post-rock. It's available for free from their site here.

Thanks for updating this, my final verdict isn't done but this is looking likely to be my album of the year. Especially if you like Ayreon, DT, Haken or Factory of Dreams (and you should).

Not my cup of tea, specially the female vocals.

As for metal album of the year, my favorite is Alcest - Les Voyages de L'Ame. It's shoegaze with BM influences. It's got this really profound beauty and emotion even if you don't understand French.

That's completely different so it's not surprising. I don't like Kayodot either.

Yah, reviewed them for my blog not too long back.

EDIT: Try Thy Catafalque. They released an album last year that was incredible. Better than Alcest easily imo.

EDIT: Kauan are another that do a similar thing, though more Neo-Folk/Doom/Post-Rock.

Agalloch
Yeah I've heard the other 2, but I was under the impression that Agalloch is slightly more conventional BM like this. I'll check them out too.

I can't get into straightforward black metal. The only album of that sort I even managed to completely listen to was Filosofem :-\

Kauan sounds good, thanks.

Black Metal is horrendously varied, probably the most so of any of the metal sub-genres. Off the top of my head, there's Black/Thrash, Bestial Black, Raw Black, Norwegian (2nd wave) Black, First Wave Black, Melodic Black, Symphonic Black, Folk/Black, Ambient Black, Blackgaze, DSBM (Depressive Suicidal Black Metal). Even "Dark Metal" (Neo-Folk + Doom Metal + Black Metal) which is coming to light (artists such as Agalloch and Kauan both fit here), and Viking Metal* takes strong influences from the sub-genre, not to mention oddball bands like Diapsiquir's "Industrial Black" or Angst Skvadron's "Psychedelic Black." Whilst it's probably likely most of this won't do it for you, it might be worthwhile taking a gander at some of the differences. I'm a bit of Black Metal nut so if anything here interests you I could probably follow it up with at least a few rec's. Come to think of it, you'd probably like Bal-Sagoth and Summoning's "Mortal Heroes..." who have a VERY symphonic approach to their BM.

*Without getting into too much of an argument, "Viking Metal" does have a set of specific genre characteristics though is still a 'young' genre and finding it's roots. Turisas and Amon Amarth, two commonly cited "Viking Metal" bands are in fact, not Viking Metal at all playing Symphonic/Folk and Melodic Death respectively. I make no distinction between "Viking" and "Pagan Black," the former is a more popular term but seeing as most of the bands have nothing to do with Vikings, the latter makes more sense.

Interesting. I always thought of viking metal as melodic death.

I should probably mention I can't stand BM shrieks :P
Anyway, I went and heard all those tracks you linked.

Black/Thrash, Bestial Black, Raw Black, Norwegian (2nd wave) Black, First Wave Black, Melodic Black, Symphonic Black
These are what I meant by "conventional". Didn't like them at all.

Folk/Black, Ambient Black, Blackgaze, DSBM
Viking Metal
These were good, specially DSBM, but I'm not really interested in more.

Diapsiquir's "Industrial Black"
Wow, that just sounds terrible >.<

Bal-Sagoth and Summoning
Hmm...nah.

But damn, that's a lot of variation.

I guess I'll stick to dark metal and occasionally blackgaze ;)
