Bal-Sagoth is great. I'm the only person out of any of my friends who's listened to them a lot. The first song (and still one of my favorites) I ever heard from them is Callisto Rising. That particular album, The Power Cosmic, is probably my favorite by them.

Nope, combination of Black Metal, (Nordic) Folk and Doom touches for the most part. Often has slow bombastic drums and mid-range growls, along with other things. The best example to exemplify the sound I can think of are Einherjer, but their music isn't as good as other bands. Often one element dominates the sound lending the variation; Equilibrium's Viking/Black, Slartibartfass' Viking/Folk or Moonsorrow's Viking/Doom for example. And yes, Diapsiqur is indeed an acquired taste that usually takes a little while to really understand what they're doing. I love it but can see why a lot wouldn't

Anyway, a have a friend whose almost exclusively been listening to Dark Metal since it's origins so I dredged up his list of rec's for you.

I began with Battle Magic but usually listen to Ultima Thule these days. Though it's a hard album to recommend because I can never remember the full name of the title. *looks up* "Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule." Yeah... I can remember foreign names easier than that. But yah, their output is pretty consistent...

The number of Metalcore bands I don't think stink are very small. Combining bland Groove Metal with Bro-fisting New York Hardcore is just a recipe for disaster, and to my mind PD fall into this category. But hey, at least it isn't as bad as Deathcore, which to my current knowledge consists of one little known French band that I like. I counter with 7 Angels 7 Plagues who manage to remain quite creative with it, and latter Converge who started out as Hardcore Punk so have an idea of how to make an energetic song.

I find metalcore really underdeveloped and lacking in variety. When I want unhinged aggression, I'd rather listen to RATM or SOAD.

Generally punk can be very good at unhinged aggression, far more so than a lot of extreme metal which is rather more 'refined,' just not metalcore. A lot has a sort of "it matters less what we play so long as we have energy and break something in the process;' a raw animalism that forms an integral part of their sound. Grindcore or Powerviolence for example, or even crustier varieties of hardcore like Disfear work well when I want to vent. Though now that I remember your dislike for BM, I suppose this will also go very much unloved

And no, hardcore punk doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, though I do like post-hardcore bands like Fugazi and Pianos Become the Teeth.

Black metal fans should check out Mamaleek. Interesting Arabic style.

Uneven Structure - Februus

Progressive djent. Meshuggah-style passages, but with spacy atmospheric ambient backgrounds. Quite unique, and relaxing in a way.

CD2 contains half an hour of purely ambient tracks.

They also have an EP called 8 available for free on their site, but that's conventional djent and nothing special.

Guys I haven't been following this thread very much, just wanted to throw out a list of atmospheric black metal that I like a lot. It's all mostly new age stuff, my favorites are in bold I would most certainly recommend any of these albums if you are in to atmo-black. Also in to doom and drone if anybody is in to that.

From what I've heard of Drudkh it isn't really atmospheric though.

Really heavy doom. The band has members from Om, Neurosis and Melvins.

Sunpocrisy - Samaroid Dioramas

Well it's more of Drudkh's first two albums that are atmospheric. It's just a different type of atmosphere than you're used to, much more supernal and natural. Actually 'Autumn Aurora' is my favorite album of all time of any genre. Early Drudkh is leagues ahead of anything else they released - and for that matter most black metal ever released.

I should clarify on this list, Windir and Moonsorrow more folky than atmospheric - but still solid stuff. It's really all good metal unless you're only in to orthodox black or whatever. Negura Bunget nor Astrofaes aren't so much atmospheric either but damn good bands!

I second Shrinebuilder, good doom metal.

Thanks for the list. Empyrium is amazing, somehow they escape this list but I've been a fan for a few years.

Great metal with a 'neofolk' twist.

Kauan - Tietäjän Laulu - I listened to this album a few weeks ago and was pretty impressed, more metal 'neofolk' - it's a very interesting new genre I'm excited to see what comes of it. Will listen more closely to both albums today.

I do see 3-4 bands I haven't listened to and will be more than glad to check them out in the next few days, appreciate it!

as a side note, 'Forgotten Woods - Curse of Mankind' is a great album that I've added to my personal list as well.

I've tried listening to a couple of metalcore bands like Converge and Botch but it's too...let's say, brutal for me. And overly mathy stuff, even math rock like Don Caballero or Battles, annoys me for some reason I can't figure out.

I do like Animals as Leaders though, and I've been meaning to listen to Tesseract and Textures.

Try Tesseract, Chimp Spanner and Skyharbor in particular. They aren't as "full on" as some of the other artists

In the past few years we've finally seen a new Italian metal band climbing the ladder of their subgenre. Those of you who dig folk metal might find Folkstone of your taste, though the singing in Italian might need some time to get used to. They are quite reminiscent of In Extremo, and it seems they are becoming quite popular in germanic countries too. Here they are unifying the whole country, attracting also listeners from non-metal folk rock genres, and there's a growing dedication for them. Part of the reason is also they are organizing and promoting metal festivals such as Foschfest in what previously was a pretty barren scenario.
And live they are simply amazing, at the last Fosch they left Korpiklaani speechless...
