I know man!!!  I hyperventilate daily at the thought of a new CoL album.

I bought the Eviga Riket (Eternal Kingdom) companion book a few months ago, and got an awesome free Cult of Luna shirt out of it.  It's beeeeeeeast!

You should hear their song they have streaming online:

I know it's a very obvious suggestion, but have you tried Ahab?
Edit: Also Colosseum

I'd suggest giving Esoteric a try

Eh, not my cup of tea.

I tend to listen to old school Death Metal.

I do this on every forum once every year: promote Leviathan.

I consider it to be among the absolute top as it comes to blackmetal. Albums like "Howl Mockery at the Cross" and the split with Sapthuran... its genius, just genius. Wrest's Lurker of Chalice is also great.

For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Presently listening to the latest The Project Hate MCMXCIX -The Cadaverous Retaliation Agenda-, I have to say it has a lot more variation than anything they've done before.
It's not that far removed from being a much more satisfactory alternative to Therion, minus the operatic gizmos and pop/goth trappings, and has something of a bit more restrained Ram-Zet. Toning down their suffocating wall of sound opened some much needed breathing space, allowing the introduction of more melodic bits here and there.

I Feed You the Flesh of Your Poisonous Christ

Interludes put apart, all songs clock from 9 to 15 minutes but never feel overlong to me -something I often struggled with on earlier records-. One gripe would be that individual parts within the songs do not flow that well, with some quite abrupt transitions.

If they keep going that way, some outstanding stuff may be along the road.

Whilst the individual musicians seem to be pushing themselves - the vocals in particular are both incredible here - something about it didn't leap out at me like in previous releases. If you're unfamiliar with them, they have a LONG back catalogue of awesomeness. "The Lustrate Process" and "Armageddon March Eternal" remain my favourites, but then I also have undying adoration for their previous femme fatale, Jonna Enckell. I even have both her solo Ambient CDs knocking around :P

My holiday playlist involves this album (need to give it a proper spin still), the new Mammoth Mammoth (stoner rock), Vandroya (Prog/Power) and Fen [From an older album] (Folk/Post-Black).

As sonically impressive as it may be, their back catalog always struck me as .... monolithic. Crushingly heavy and intense, but lacking variation. This looks to me like them proving they're more than one-trick ponnies. It sure lacks the homogeneity of earlier works, but what works for Motorhead or AC/DC mainly works because they keep their songs short, TPH1999 doesn't.
I do like my metal intense and sprawling, but going all out from start to end lacks ... well, dynamics, I guess. Nonetheless, their usual in your face style puts a wide grin on my face and a gives nice adrenaline rush. But after a while the songs start to drag.

Edit :
Mammoth Mammoth has more of a punkish vibe to these ears, but that's not that bad. Some no thrills music is a nice change in times where being bloated gets hailed as 'complex'.
Vandroya, well ... it's power metal. Grew tired of of it a long time ago, at least the vocalist sounds a lot like Doro which is a nice change from wailing 'operatic' vocals. Throwing in short neoclassical bits and Dream Theater-like instrumental breaks doesn't change the fact it's quite stereotypical euro-PM, even if they're from Brazil.
Fen is more along my present tastes, haven't heard of them yet. Gotta dig a bit deeper.

HAIL TRUE METAL.

And stuff.

Yeah, I'm mostly into a hodgepodge of progressive, gothic, industrial and power metal, with maybe hints of thrash here or there.

Of course, I've got into the traditional heavy metal more lately, lots of Maiden and Priest. Katana is an amazing new band of that style with some great stuff on their two albums.

Other stuff I've been listening to lately include Aina, Cloudscape, Rage and Age of Artemis.

Rage

One of the very few traditional bands that never disappointed me. As for Katana, going retro is a difficult thing to pull off. While there's nothing wrong with their outpout, there's nothing great either. Traditional metal had its peak in the late 70s, early 80s. The time was right, and the music did fit the mood. 30 years later, the mood is no longer the same and metal has evolved a lot in the meantime. Traditional metal was the biggest thing back then because extreme metal had only started to emerge and, to be honest, wasn't that great (think of Venom or Hellhammer per example).

I have yet to find a retro band that offers music that is on par with the originals. They may sound the same, but they lack the authenticity. I feel no nostalgia, listening to retro styled metal won't make me feel like I'm 16 again. It's not a matter of old bands being better ... it's just, feels like 'been there, done that', spandex, stripes, spots, hairspray.

Want a Trad band that doesn't fit the mold? May I suggest Root? Czech band that started playing BM but then their behemoth of a vocalist switched to a clean baritone and the whole band shifted towards a sort of Black-tinged Trad.

Just finished my first listen of Cult of Luna's Vertikal, gone are most of the doomy/sludgy aspects of their music. I need a few more listens to decide wether it's good or not. In Awe Of is a great song though.

Now going into the latest Riverside. Only marginally metalic until now, but far from bad.

My latest discoveries include the Djent band Circles and Stoner/Sludge newcomers Void of Sleep.

That Vandroya ended up being pretty good btw, albeit it is still your standard PM affair.

Remember Attacker's debut, "Battle of Helms Deep?" Fan of USPM like Helstar's "Nosferatu," classic Jag Panzer, or Liege Lord? You'll be wanting this when it drops in a couple of days...
