I think it might have been a timely and justified death for Jiraiya considering Pein was a former student as Sarutobi in the series ended up giving his life to try and defeat a former student. It fits in too since Orochimaru, another Sannin was supposedly killed by his "pupil" Sasuke.
Pupil-Master deaths are often well tolerated by me as long as there is a just explanation.
However I personally don't see why Shizune or Kakashi had to die. Kakashi is way too smart and too resilient to be killed by merely one of Pein's bodies. Remember Kakashi is the one who was able to endure Itachi's Mangekyou Sharingan and one of the only Ninja in existence who can probably summon Space-Time Ninjutsu. There is no way someone of his caliber can be killed like this, regardless if his Chakra was extremely low, he had to have something planned.
Also I don't think that Shizune was that close to Naruto. He said 3 people close to Naruto would die. Emphasis on close, this would lead to Iruka kicking the bucket.
Did Iruka in fact die? And if so was it protecting Konohamaru? I don't remember.
I don't know...for the most part we KNOW that Jiraiya is dead but Kakashi and Shizune haven't been confirmed. It would really be a devastating blow to Konoha if not only all it's infrastructure disappeared but all the S-class ANBU/Jounin are killed.
Also what the fuck was that Rinnegan shit that Pein used? You can't expect me to believe that he can subdue a Kyuubi in the same way a Sharingan user does.

I don't think all possibilities of helping Naruto rest solely on the elders and frog shoulders', it's senseless and not fair. Shikamaru has one of the quickest minds in the Ninja world. I know he wants to trust his friend but his friend is about to die if he doesn't do SOMETHING.
Better to observe the battle and at least ATTEMPT to form a master plan than to just sit around bickering. I mean it only takes the torture/exhumer dude to examine the bodies along with his lustful and ditzy blond assistant, meanwhile someone can be analyzing the battle in case all of the frogs die in combat and Naruto is captured or killed.

During the battle between Sarutobi and Orochimaru at least the ANBU were watching the battle closely, taking notes and waiting for either an opening or opportunity to strike or assist the Hokage at a moment's notice. I know Konoha has just been leveled but Nin should be on standby considering the dude that just leveled the village is still alive and well.
