Do you intend to watch the first series? SDF Macross (that's the one that was aired before 'Do You Remember Love?' (In a later series DYRL is mentioned as a movie (like a chronicle that tells about the events that happened in SDF))

Well, the order is the following:

  • Macross Zero
  • SDF Macross
  • Macross - Do You Remember Love?
  • Macross Flashback (more of a "recap" of all the songs of Lynn Minmay + additional scenes as how the main character embark on a journey towards the core of the Milky Way)
  • Macross II - Lovers again (I think it's an alternative sequel)
  • Macross Plus (There exist a recap movie (again ;)) with additional scenes, might want to watch it)
  • Macross 7
  • Macross Dynamite 7
  • Macross Frontier

More info about the alternative sequel can be found at Wikipedia.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Macross II, the only animated project without Studio Nue's direct involvement, was declared a parallel-world story by Studio Nue.
I see, so I should watch it in this order? I love my new speed x_x;;

Edit -- The movie has a full picture of Sheryl. I was wondering why Ranka or Alto weren't present but now that I thought deeper it would make sense to actually have a connection of Sheryl's story: Remember the picture that floated around with Sheryl's name on it and her mother? Her grandmother passed down the earrings to her daughter, telling her to let Sheryl wear them. So What exactly happened to Sheryl?! How did she end up in the slams? Who abandoned her? Etc etc. There has to be a big story behind all of that. You can't just "Oh, this happened" because the TV series clearly doesn't explain what happened. That's one point. The other point is Ranka and her Brother, (probably just few things that happened between them). And also Alto's. Tho' the movie supposedly to be based off of the TV series (with new scenes), I hope they do add these features in. I want to know more about Alto and Sheryl's story. Ranka was summed up enough to understand it.

One thing I'd like to add for those who just finished is that for about a week after I finished I couldn't decide if I liked Sheryl or Ranka better, but as I gave it more and more thought, and listened to the music more, I fell for Ranka wholeheartedly. My point is that your perceptions my change once the high from finishing such an amazing show is gone.

I haven't seen Frontier since the last episode aired... I still prefer balls to the wall Sheryl over emo Ranka. :D Though I prefer Ranka's voice. Even though both have amazing voices.

I loved the ending. It was perfect. Thank god Alto didn't choose between the two; you could tell how amazing both were. Tho', in the very end. I still cheer for Sheryl. Her lyrics, voice, songs, maturity, hair style and color! She deserves him!  :D

Didn't they explain some of this in the series?

I feel obligated to add, "Hell no, Ranka deserved him," but the truth is, both of them very much deserved him but he simply didn't pick. Just because Sheryl is your favorite doesn't really mean only she deserves him. Songs and hair color are hardly enough for such a thing... Both girls did a ton for Alto and clearly felt the utmost affection for him.

Newy! The spoiler, fix it >_<

I'm starting from Macross Zero and leading the way as to what Newy recommended. I saw the old 1984 graphics, I was about to throw up. But I'm interested in characters and storyline.

Btw ... when you have a poster of the new movie with Sheryl all over it, you know who's the main story is going to focus on.

You're right, my mistake. It slipped my mind since everyone in the thread for the past couple of pages has finished the series.

(click to show/hide)

Ranka and Sheryl are both main characters in the show. That's how it is, and that's how it's always going to be. Sheryl's face was also on the cover of the Macross Frontier Vocal Collection but that doesn't mean she was the main part of the album. In fact, if I remember correctly, Ranka had a couple more songs than Sheryl.

Imo, if you let your affection for one character diminish your affection for the other, it really makes the series less enjoyable. I'm glad that I really liked both Ranka and Sheryl while watching the show, and that I still do now, although I favor Ranka. It made it more fun to appreciate and value both characters. A friend of mine watched it around the same time as me and he didn't like Sheryl at all. I felt that he was missing out on an important part of the series.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Hating either of the girls would just ruin the show. I started out not liking Sheryl at all, but eventually I grew to like her about as much as Ranka (though I still don't like what the creators of the show did with her hair :P). On the actual singing side of things I like Ranka a lot better. Just listen to Seryl Aimo then the original Aimo and it's clear who is the winner. I couldn't actually listen through the Sheryl version all the way.

Your right, I'll give a little credit to Ranka. I still don't like her. =/

I also prefer Ranka's singing. Though I really enjoy Sheryl's voice, I generally only listen to her in the duets. The only song of hers I listen to on her own is Diamond Crevasse. You're right about the Aimo, though. Sheryl's rendition was absolutely terrible. Ranka transitions to Sheryl's songs much better than the reciprocal.

If we're talking about Macross songs, my top favorite is What 'bout my Star?@Formo with Ranka and Sheryl followed by Watashi no Kare wa Pilot by Ranka.

My favorite is Lion, Northern Cross, Triangler, What 'bout My Star? (Sheryl on Stage), Welcome to My FanClub's Night! (Sheryl on Stage), and Infinity which are all by Sheryl only. The Nyan Nyan Special Service Medley (Tokumori) is with Sheryl and Ranka. No, I'm not being biased. Ranka's only good song is actually in the Nyan Nyan special service. If you listen to the Nyan Nyan song going 9:01 into it, that's like the epic favorite part!

I don't think you understand the definition of biased lol.

I still can't stop singing that darned 'Ninjin Love's you yeah' song. It's only like one minute long, but the music is so catchy. I also really like Ai Oboetemasuka, Aimo, Anata no Oto, Watashi no Kare wa Pilot, and that quick little Chinese restaurant music. I liked What 'bout my star a lot when I heard it on Kawaii-radio about 4 months ago, but I sort of played it too much at the time and killed it. On the Sheryl side I enjoy Diamond Crevasse, Northern Cross, and Lion. Best two songs on the whole album, SMS Shoutai no Uta (I imagine some day with my anime friends getting drunk, swinging a pint of ale around and singing this song, "Susume, susume esuemuesu! :D" lol) and of course the Triangler duet.

Oh, and 'Tally Ho' is really awesome as BG music. A few others from the BG I like, but I can't remember the names.

I just ran by it when I was listening to the soundtrack. I forgot where it was in the anime until I stopped and actually listened to the lyrics and remembered Ranka in the carrot suit. The lyrics are quite funny actually. The song talks about life and having dreams and decently serious things, but then it ends every phrase with "carrot loves you yeah". Most Japanese songs don't make a lot of sense, but I can't imagine what people would think as they pass someone on the street singing this.

So I just went through my OST list and counted how many songs each girl has. I counted only the songs that the girls didn't do together and I included every song that had the character listed as the artist. Can someone confirm that Ranka has 30 and Sheryl only has 13? That's extremely one sided. I went back and only counted the songs actually featuring the girls (no instrumentals or repeat songs unless the repeat changed/was a different version) and the numbers were 15 Ranka, 9 Sheryl. If I were a Sheryl fan I would demand a movie and a movie soundtrack featuring her ;)
