what the tale is based around makes no difference, his grandfather named him that.
His name is kakarot or w/e as vegeta points out later in the series.

Simply put hes not asian although hes supposed to be raised by asians hes a fucking alien

panicfire:
if this is DB,
then why are there all the DBZ characters?

is it gonna be DBZ or DB?

android 18?
vegeta?
napa?
no krillin?

i mean, DB, didn't have vegeta, we didn't know goku was a saijan, and we all loved krillin in it.
so any serious info on if it's gonna be DB or DBZ? and yeah i wonder, did goku meet up with a hairdresser that cut off his hair, ohh no that's not possible, his hair grows back at enormous rate. and shouldn't he be SMALL for db? like ultra tiny?

The original Dragonball was loosely based on the old Chinese monkey king legend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Wukong
(Tail, magic staff, climbing the tower, training with God etc...) The Dragonball movie seems to have none of that.

The movie is not Dragonball Z. There is however a sequel already written, so who knows what may come next.

Edit:

--- Quote from: wikipedia ---The manga and anime series Dragon Ball was based on Journey to the West, and the protagonist was named Son Goku (the Japanese way to pronounce the kanji Sun Wukong). However, while Goku had a few items in his possession similar to the Monkey King (such as a somersault cloud and an extending magical staff), he appeared to be more human than monkey (he is later revealed to be a member of a race of monkey-tailed aliens called Saiyans), and his initial mischievous behavior stems from his youth and innocence, rather than from arrogance and sometimes outright malice.

milosbeli:
I lol'd when i saw the intro for the movie.

panicfire:
i know all that,
but still my question isn't answered with knowing that DB is based on that old chinese story
going to the west.  still what the hell are vegeta and nappa doing in a DB movie, they only appear in DBZ.
