Minami-ke Okawari
« on: March 26, 2008, 04:40:14 PM »
I've been seriously wondering as to what subtitle group to go with for this anime. I usually don't care, but I realized that a bad fansub group can ruin the meaning of a show...

I know Ayako-Sae is the best, but they're only on episode 4; everyone else is at least five episodes ahead, so this warrants a change of group for me.

So... question for anyone else that's following this anime: what group to get?

On a completely unrelated side note:
It almost pissed me off about how, during the first season of the show, about 75% of people decided to jump down Ayako's throat just because they actually decided to have a little bit of fun with the fansub (and only the intro, at that... which would have otherwise been the same goddamn thing 12 times in a row). I was about to suggest that everyone remove the pineapple stuck up their ass and realize it's okay to be a little more mellow! In fact, I suggest it for your health!
Oh, and thinking about it logically helps too, in which case you realize 2 points:
1. You're not paying them to do this, AND they're doing a good job out of what they DID promise to do.
2. ... The thing you're getting pissed off over doesn't even have anything to do with the actual translation...

Cute, huh?

I can't help you too much, since I'm waiting for Ayu to finish the first season before starting it. Although Ayako's "intro" don't sound too bad to me, so maybe I'll check that release out and see how it is.

For the second season, I've heard that X_X is somehow connected to Your-Mom (but then again, who isn't? *rimshot*), so interpret that information as you will.

Though it's unrelated, about Minami-ke:

It actually wasn't even the intro-- it was simply this thing about sitting farther away from the TV and not expecting too much, that Chiyaki (spelled wrong?) says before every single episode. Moreover, they actually still left the entire REAL translation on-screen. It was only the subs at the bottom that had some stuff they thought was funny down there. They did dub over the intros of a few of the very last episodes, though... but people could have just chosen to skip it at that point... T_T;;;

Overall, in both sub and video quality, Ayako is easily comparable, and probably just as good as Ayu. To give you and idea as to why they have a low rating...

Ayako is having a little too much "fun" with the translation. If I wanted commentary I would read your blog!

It's pretty much because of complete morons like that. >_>;;
Having fun on something you do for free is apparently disgraceful...

I can see people waiting for Ayu simply because they always like to follow the group or like the group a lot, and feel some loyalty, but otherwise Ayako's version is hardly inferior...

That aside, I guess everyone feels as apprehensive about choosing between the worse quality sub groups for Okawari as I do. I just don't know if picking any of them would be worth it, because I usually just watch a show once and then never again, so I wanna get everything I can out of it first run through...

Cute, huh?

[Your-Mom] does playful stuff in Heroic Age such as the examples shown below all of which occurred in one episode.  They have been playful with other episodes as well.   While you don't mind that, I didn't care for it.   I would have commented in their irc channel, but I didn't want to be banned so I kept silent.

However, Ayako did not do that during the actual episode. They just dubbed over/subbed over the very first opening part. To understand, you'd have to watch the releases for yourself. It's hardly anything that would make their sub "worse" than others.

Now, Your-Mom... that might actually get distracting, and in the way. I would admit that's not good.

I dont mind translator groups to be playfull or try silly things. However aslong as it does not obstruct the original anime. I mean i could care less about endings or opening songs/parts aslong as the actuall important part of the episode is left alone.
Sig removed for being oversized.

I have been watching those whatever subs, like X_X, but I was also replacing them with the Ayako releases as soon as they got something out. Though I'm replacing Ayako's subs of the first season with Ayu's. I didn't mind the creativity in "translating" the warning stuff in the beginning but I just thought Ayu would be the best choice as they have established themselves as a quality group.

What comes to the quality of those X_X and Aho-Neko Subs of Okawari, I don't care that much because Okawari is so inferior compared to the first season. I only laugh rarely when watching it so they suffice very well.

I'm almost tempted to watch Heroic Age as subbed by Your-Mom. I'd heard about Y-M's vandalism comments before, but after reading that Heroic Age is an overall mediocre series, I'd think that Y-M's shenanigans might make the show a bit more entertaining.

I didn't feel like making a new thread, and this one's not that old anyway...

I think I might go ahead and get Tweakanime's releases. Overall, they don't seem to be too bad of a subbing group, and their anidb rating's pretty decent, considering how harsh people are on groups these days (take out those 4 scores below a 7 from this). I would wait for Ayako, but they've been on episode 4 for... pretty long...

Has anyone else watched the Tweakanime release?

This could be called grave digging, but I won't create a new thread for this:

I finished watching Minami-ke yesterday and being the impatient faggot I am, I downloaded all of Ayako's release (up to ep. 10) when I got to the 4th ep of the first season. I was thinking about waiting for them to complete subbing the series to start watching it, but I saw that TA's rating is on par with Ayako and they are one episode away from finishing the sub. So I'm direct-downloading the first TA h264 ep from their site to compare to Ayako's h264 release (pretty fast download at 280KB/s).

I'll post the results when I'm done, hopefully TA is as good or even better than Ayako, however, I really Ayako's intros for the first series, so I'm a bit sceptical about this.

Ugh, the site went down while I was posting this:

EDIT: I just finished Ayako's, the colours are warmer than TA's and the video quality is superior, despite the smaller file size. As for the translations, both seem identical, but TA's is a bit more conservative about a few things, using some Japanese words instead of translating them into "spring" or "spring resort" like Ayako's translation, I can't comment on the actual quality since I know nothing of Japanese, but both seemed to flow well enough and both mean the same things... Also, Ayako used some on-screen translations (I'm not sure what translations of some Japanese words written on the screen are called...) while TA didn't use any that I could see. The karaoke is similar in both, but I don't care all that much about it, so meh.

Bottom line: Both are good subs, but Ayako uses less HDD space and has a better video quality. Yet TweakAnime is about to release the last episode, while Ayako might take over a month to get the last three eps out.

Screencaps for those who want to compare (I couldn't find any photo hosting sites that would take a 4MB image, so I just split into 4 comparison shots):

Ayako have used a filter to boost the colours. They overdid it. The left screencaps are much truer to the original source than Ayako's saturated version.

The red eyes do give Haruka a nice "Demonic Possession" look.

I enjoyed some of the openings for Minami ke.  A few of them were really funny.

The comments Lime added to the semi ecchi shots of Nobue, in the middle of each episode of Strawberry Marshmallow, really annoyed me.  They took a show I wouldn't mind watching with friends/family/girls and added unnecessary, highly offensive jokes about lolicon.  It wasn't a show that sexualized the little girls, so why screw with it in the translation?  Or at least don't encode it into the video, and leave it out of at least one of the subtitle streams.

Unfortunetly, that's true, but nothing that can't be fixed with 7000 saturation instead of the usual 10000 in ZoomPlayer...

The colours are off, but its still a better encode IMO...

Oh... Would you rather have TA's version or Ayako's in Box? Ayako's file size is 80% of TA's... =/

Ayako fixed the warm colours in eps 4+...

Yeah, I think I'll have to switch to TA to get the last three episodes... Probably will replace those files with Ayako's release to keep in my collection when those are out...
