Spice and Wolf was just awesome. In fact, it was extremely interesting in a sense that they used common elements such as fantasy medieval setting, wolf-goddess, etc., but made you look at all of this from an angle which is pretty much unique. At least I don't remember any other anime similar enough.
And yes, all the trading stuff was quite interesting, but you have to pay attention or you'll get lost :)
That was the interesting part about it. Thank god it wasn't like the other anime shows I've seen, drama/romance crap ... I was expecting that, but honestly the way it was presented totally got me interested and for that, I like Spice & Wolf ! .... I need to watch the extra episode, ... haven't seen it yet! lol.

Same here. I need to get hold of it ;D

Well, I was watching the show right after the DVD's were released, so I was able to go in "natural" order: 6 -> 6.5 -> 7...

Focus on trading is only one of the examples of how the things you expect to be cliche turned into more slice of life, but, surprisingly, unusual way. No mages or knights, goddess who's not naive, nor dominating, and uses wits instead of deity powers, flirting and gradual getting to know each other by living through all sorts of things instead of ludicrous ecchiness, and so on, and so forth. This show has quickly got to the very top of my personal list :)

I consider Spice and Wolf to be the anime the surprised me the most this year. It has a story that was refreshing watching it the 1st time. There are many many many fantasy-anime with 'gods' and things like that but S+W did it in a way not seen before. The ending begs for an s2 :)
And Horo sure was kick-ass big inside those sewers :D

Alission to Lillia came second: good story but it lacked a bit of the fantasy part ;)

There where a lot of good anime in the 1st half of this year but the 4 that stood out for me where these 2 together with Vampire Knight (excellent anime! yatta for s2!) and Rosario+Vampire  (man, that was a BLAST :D ).

Hey, Can I confirm something here? So there's 12 episodes that were released and 1 extra on a dvd which would be episode 7, correct? Making a total of 13 episodes. I'm just dling this torrent and this craziness is killing me... the file list is 1-6, 8-13. So I'm assuming the to be episode 7 would be 13?

Sorry for the confusion. I should be finished watching spice and wolf by the morrow  :D

I don't think so. I'm downloading this anime now so I can't say for sure.

Yep, that's pretty much it. Ep 7 is just 6.5, it's not supposed to hold any important stuff, if I recall (I don't even remember if I watched it anymore... >.<)

Actually, there's 12 episodes which were aired, from one to twelve. But on DVD they included a bonus one which takes place in between two arcs, i.e. episodes six and seven. So, technically it's 6.5, but some fansubbers inserted it into original enumeration, thus making it 1-6 (aired) + 7 (bonus DVD) + 8-13 (aired).

BTW, Allison to Lillia is great show as well. Seems plain at the first sight, but you can't help but get deeply involved with the characters :)

They do? I can't find it ;_; linky please (by PM preferably)? AFAIK only BSS has done it...

Episode 7 just fills in a little story between 6 and 8, sideline filler that isn't strictly vital to the story. But Spice and Wolf was always about the "filler" interactions anyway, and not so much about the storyline, just the way I like it.

Wahh. My bad. I was mislead by sunweb's post. I actually just have 1-13 minus the 7. That's why I posted my ambiguous post about what the hell I had.

Edit: This ending song is win.

I personally liked the opening song a lot. The way it picked up and then suddenly just ended on a completely flat note was just awesome.

Anyway, I found the trading aspect of it to be kinda gibberish-ish sometimes. I'd just be staring blankly at the screen as they threw out some of the terms they used... trying to make sense of what exactly they were saying. Since I didn't wanna dwell on it, and cared mainly for the storyline, most times I just gave up and kept going.

On a side note:

I don't know what everyone's been complaining about with the trading aspect.

It's all really just ways to make a profit and selling goods by bargaining etc. etc...

If it was that simple even I would have got it :D Take that deal he was offered by that kid and he kept asking Horo if the guy was lieing. I understood the make or break of this deal was if the value of that currency went up or down, but got utterly lost in the rest of the details =P

Ah, I liked that subplot. Involving two trading companies trying to make a killing or exert more influence in trade from coin-dumping, IIRC. I can't say it's pure genius since I've seen/read more intricate plots, but then they got Horo involved and it's obvious Lawrence had quite an emotional investment in the plan. I just had to finish that subplot in one sitting.
