Haven't posted in the thread in a while, so I'll throw out my current thoughts based on discussion.

Firstly, I vote the group name to just be straight "BOX". That's pretty solid.

Second, agree on the h.264/MKV/ASS/AAC. Best quality stuff around, and even though the stuff we'll be doing is old, might as well make it look the best we can, damn the bad VCR rip. :P Screw the multiple format releases. If it's not a huge pain in the ass MAYBE we could do a second format in avi with hardsubs. I'd rather not bother, but I'm not the encoder (although I'd be willing to read a bunch of guides to get it right. My PC is on all the time anyway).

I thought more had been discussed but really not. :/ Hopefully this gets off the ground soon.

I'd rather not have "Boxtorrents" in the group name; the fansubbing scene is getting more and more attention from anime production and distribution companies, and the last thing we want is more attention from the wrong people. "BOX" is good, though I suggest some clever/cheesy long name behind it, like "Bringers of Xcellence" :o

When it comes to the release format, I'm the type to focus on the subbing/creative side of things while leaving the technical side to more knowledgeable people. But h.264/aac/mkv/ass seems like a good combination. My preference would be to do softsubs for the main dialogue and hardsubs for items with special effects to avoid lag and playback problems. Actually part of me feels like harsubbed .avi is "fitting" for older anime, but since people like softsubs, there's no reason not to use them. I don't see the need for multiple releases, either. Like Hanako said, non-highdef h264/mkv releases shouldn't pose a problem for most systems, unless they're using some subpar player like WMP or VLC. I still DL some hardsub .avi fansubs myself, but that's mainly as alternatives to high-def, not out of any attachment to that format.

Speaking of hardsubs, another issue to consider is the use of logos and fansubber staff credits. I'm in favor of using them, as long as they're simple and not invasive. Just a simple "Presented by [group name] Not for sale or rent" at the title, and then a one-screen list of group staff during the ED without any flashy effects. Part of this is personal vanity, but I also don't think that leechers are entitled to 100% pristine versions of something they're getting for free. Reading a few nicknames in the video is hardly a steep price to pay. But whatever the group decides on this issue is fine.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Hard subbing our credits will also prevent other people pretending it is their release.

well, we could also take a play off of Box and just call ourselves hako or 箱 (Japanese for box).

But really I think as a group, we would benefit most from making our relationship to BoxTorrents known.

And vice versa. Later on Boxtorrents front page could add "own sub group" to the rest of impressive things.

This all sounds really interesting. Too bad I have no skills or experience and I'm usually one lazy bastard. Anything someone like that could do? :P

*cough*Someone really needs to sub the DVD version of Kodomo no Jikan though*cough*the ISOs seem to be quite easily available too*cough*

Group name could be a play on words: BOTOX ;D
Or more seriously any abbreviation like BOX BOT BoTo with some made up meaning behind them.

Nope, there's still nothing here.

so how far have things got then? :)

our irc channels are on deltaanime.net network but i immagine youd probably want to create one on rizon as its a bit more popular and youd get more people visiting in there since its just one extra channel to join rather than a completely new server. you gonna be solely bittorrent or there gonna be irc fserves too?

Use of Box is approved, but there will be no reference to torrent.  So BOX would work. I like BFG better.

For just the credits we can easily do hardsubbing, good idea.

We are gearing towards previously unsubbed old school releases.  Sources may include VHS, LD, DVD, AVI raws.  Quality will be the best available, but in the end you work with what you have.  Later we may pick up a dropped series or pre-ripped raws of something.

All essential positions are filled, raws should be arriving soon.  We are still looking for an IRC manager to set up a channel, they would also manage fserve.  Also a web host, I have a friend who can help design the site if we want one.

Eh. Maybe a website if we get good and actually have a production going on with more than a few releases. I think at most, webpage wise, we could use a subsection of forums or something. At least for now.

I agree with Box on being on rizon, I'm already in the menclave, animeone, and eclipse channels. I know a lot about IRC, but I don't have a reliable enough connection to host any kind of bot or anything, my router cuts out on me all the time

and again, my vote is totally for BFG

sounds good. well i may be able to help with a few things. I can host the site/page (on a server other than boxtorrents one) and offer a "box" type sub domain (ie subs.boxxie.com) if not i can get domains at bit of a discounted rate so lemme know about that :). i also have a fileserver script i wrote for mirc which can be loaded into any mirc and is easily customized/modified in the event people dont want to download upp/invision/other fserve scripts (i hated em and found em to be full of extra crap)

anything you think i can help with feel free to ask :)

nice, things going smoothly in here. who can make a website if you are going to provide the hosting? or design it, i'll help out if so.

i really wanted to post the idea of tagging our names right before the beginning of the anime, like one of the members said, just list everyone on the front dialoge. no need to put it during the opening theme. logo, names and a CG picture of the anime we are producing -- i can edit the photo pretty well if needed.

and i'm not sure if i voted, i have a very bad memory. i'd vote for BOX as is, solid 1 name ...

once an IRC channel is developed please post it here, i really want to go in and talk more about this. plus, rather than waiting to pick a raw to start working on, as a primary project that is and i'm not saying "hey, we shouldn't do that" infact while we are still looking for a project to start working on, i want to practice my typesettings on something. can we get anything or possibly something easy to start going with? i'm a trainee and i want to meet the other typesetters and talk through with them.

alright thats all i had in my mind, thanks. i'm at work lol ;o

Hard subbing our credits will also prevent other people pretending it is their release.
is why you wouldnt want to just put a photo style credit before the show cuz its easily edited out

if you are able to do that we would appreciate it. i don't think something like www.otakixus.com/box or www.otakixus.com/bfg would look nice, specially having my website's name infront of it since it would only be related to anime, but not related in general to fansubbing, releases, boxtorrents, etc etc. would you be able to install a wordpress blog on it too? if not its cool. we'll see how it goes, hanako should contact you about this once we confirm the group's name.

I tried to set up an IRC chan. I failed miserably.

I'm currently idling in #botox on Rizon. I found that name quite funny, so I used it :P

EDIT: I've been allowed to get the Ayu bot to idle in it as well.
