Burkingam:
The only time I use Facebook is when I have a really good reason. e.g. a friend is organizing a party and it's the only place I can have the information about it. I hate the way the site manage privacy. It's a heaven for fraudsters. You have no idea how much someone can do with just your name, your date of birth and your mother's maiden name.

Unless you're like me and go around handing out that info on little business cards

Come on, I tell you guys my name, age, grade, what I do, etc etc, and I could not care less xD

Let's just say I'm a bit Crypto-anarchist. And perhaps a bit more paranoid than you. When filling forms, I put fake names, date of births and , half the time,  even sex. You can't even trust me if I use a pronoun to designate myself on a forum, as I often use the wrong one, but most of the time I just avoid using any, or I use "it" and pretend to be a tentacle monster (that's right, this running gag is not entirely purposeless).

The only time I will release personal information is when it's necessary to hold a conversation. Saying I'm studying programming for example makes sense if we are talking about school or computing. Censuring that would be annoying.

@Kami:

Same purpose as you... Got me on facebook 'cuz majority of my classmates are there. Plus I can ask them bout exam dates and assignments and even chat with my aunt.

But other than that, I don't really like social networks other than FB. :P

Actually you can know that this is their real account if they are mentioned in their official sites. Eg. Jeopardy! has a official FB account mentioned on their site.

So unless you have real friends and classmates already, social networks like FB are suitable. Looking for people at FB, like Kami said, isn't recommended. ;)
