I don't get it, either. I ended the series thinking... "well that went nowhere." I think the problem was that I entered the series without expecting it to be what it was: a slapstick-heavy, self-referential, character-driven anime, with little actual character
development but lots of interaction and "zany" situations. And panty shots

On the other hand, it did make me more receptive to character-oriented anime and I ended up watching Honey & Clover a bit afterwards, something I never would have given a second glance at before. And I'm glad I did... I'm a fan of that series now.
I may actually come back to this one, once I acclimate a bit more to Japanese humor.
