Light Yagami gets my vote for All-Time Bastard

After watching the last ep of DN a night or two ago, I feel that the way Near treated Light wasn't quite right... Right after Light explains how his actions have made the world incredibly more peaceful, Near doesn't even take a second thought and instantly replies with, "No, Light Yagami, you're nothing but a cold-blooded murder with delusions of being a god."

It just pissed me off a little, because even though Light is a bastard you've gotta admire him for throwing his soul away for the sake of making the world a decent place for honest people to live in.

nstgc:
You seem to be forgetting something very important -- Near was an immature retard. Just as a child can't understand why nations go to war, Near, unlike L, could never comprehend something as "complex" as "if you all the bad people, crime will go down". This isn't the same as capital punishment where people are killed by the government after a trial. These people are killed by a god (Light may be human, but the entity Kira is not...something else Near could never understand) and not always after a trial. While lacking in justice, it is fair. I'm sure Light accidentally killed people he shouldn't have, but he was fair about it (he didn't play favorites). So not only were more criminals dying (which actually inhibited the ability for the "bad guys" to do bad things) it also would have produced a "God's Judgment" feeling. Nothing says "control" like "divine will".

These things are too abstract and complex for Near. Now, if Light instead said "here kid, I'll give you a sucker if you just hurry up and die" he may have won, but "dude, look, the world is a better place because of me already and it'lll only get better" is pointless. And for those doubters, they even say at the beginning of the second season that Light's plan was effective so there was little room for 'tard boy to argue.

Also, @Auzrian, Griffith was far from being the greatest bastard of all. Recall, assuming you have watched/read death note, that Light scarified his own father while lying to him (strait-faced no less) and killed his supporters. Also, Grifith had an extremely shitty life. From the anime he had tongue cut out so he couldn't speak, his tends in his wrists cut so he could never fight, and his tendons in his legs slashed so he couldn't stand no less walk or run. Half starved and probably throughly raped, his life was hell. Given the circumstances, I bet most people would have ended up in a similarly twisted state. Certainly they would hate Gutsu. What was lights plight? He was bored? He was a strait A pretty boy would could have had anything he wanted. He was loved and respected up until the final episode.

Light is still the greater Bastard. He also is one of the greatest anime characters ever (meaning top 25). Griffith is pretty cool and he is a bastard, but he isn't even in the top 10 bastards, or top 100 greatest. Suitengu would make for a good #2 if his life didn't suck as bad as it did (of all the "villains" he has had the hardest life in my opinion as he was abused emotionally, physically, and mentally to an extreme degree then life shat on him).

[edit] Suitengu is from Speed Grapher by the way. Like Light, he was actual a good guy, however, he has a long list of offenses.:

1) murder
2) abuse of power (I find this to be a serious transgression)
3) he gave a little girl hormones to prevent her from entering puberty so he could brain wash her into working a fetish club
4) Like Griffith (after his "ascension") and Light (he was born a bastard) Suitengu was guiltless in his acts, but unlike Light, he was at one time a normal kid. Griffith was always a bit of a dick.

Dakkar:
Death Note's storyline, character development, and morality are simply inconsistent. Authors started off pretty well, but then for the sake of intrigue, tension, and proper moral image of the work they began to screw with characters and the rules they introduced themselves. It's quite annoying to see guys able to think through unbelievably complicated schemes making stupid mistakes just for show to continue. As the result, Light's personality became contradictory to the extent when he didn't look like a complete character.

BTW, it was really funny to see Near prosecuting Light and praising Mello at the same time in the last episode. Sure, it's not a problem that Mello was basically a criminal, who was associated with mafia, was kidnapping people, was killing Near's own comrades, etc, etc... It's totally fine to call him hero and use him to catch Kira, who is definitely a bad guy. Naturally, together they're greater than L, who never used such methods and thus did have a right to accuse Light of being criminal.

nstgc:
And where did the characters go astray? Light was a surprisingly static character and L dies. Near is static. Misa Misa base character never changes. The attitudes and opinions of the cops does change, but not only are they insignificant, but the chances are logical.

Dakkar:
Well, Light developed quite a bit. If you compare an idealistic boy in the beginning to the the guy in the end of the series, the difference is pretty obvious and it's not entirely due to getting mature. At start, Kira despised any use of the Note other than passing judgement on the criminals, then he included whose who directly pursue him in the list, next, started to use others to do the killings, and by the end he was already up to killing his own sister, playing to death his father, and forcing his own allies to commit suicide. This, BTW, is one of the flaws of the story - if he already goes that far, then why not threat politicians into giving away his pursuers, as other Kiras did? OK, L was financially independent and had no links to particular government, so with the brain of his it's believable that he could hide as long as people dying because of him is no bother, but with Near situation was totally different, and by that time Light was corrupted enough to act likewise.
Misa personality is totally inconsistent. At certain moments she's just completely dumb and whining loli, on other occasions she shows rather developed intellect. Not to mention her obsession with Light seems unnatural at times.
L was good overall. He was the manga authors' favorite character, so they handled him properly.
Near... Well, the person who claims the highest moral standards while thinking of his subordinates as expendable resources, not to mention his relations with Mello, but completely trusted by other SPK and japanese group members looks strange. With the methods he's using in mind, it's not clear why he simply didn't kill Light in order to show that the killings would stop. And yeah, the divine revelations he receives every five minutes are quite annoying...
Mello was just psychopathic teen with all the complexes of his age. He's just a mess and so is neither developing, nor interesting.
