Somehting I can watch with my 8 year old brother
« on: July 04, 2008, 05:11:27 AM »
I'm looking for an ova or short series that I can watch with my 8 year old brother.  He really likes Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, so anything along those lines would be cool.  Mecha would be even better as I'm a big mecha fan.

I would say 'Bleach' (yes, I know it has a lot episodes, but if you watch just the first or second arc it could be OK...) and 'Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann', they are both funny and have a lot of action...

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, there's a lot of physical comedy and nothing to deep. I watched it with my little brother, although he's 13, he really liked it.

I'm quite sure that he mentions "short" series (aka, not bleach), but if you have time for bleach (200+ episodes, but less if you skip the fillers, and still on-going) your brother will like that. And if you have time, maybe try Hunter x Hunter (roughly 80-90 episodes including all the ovas which are continuation from the tv series). Marchen Awakens Romance may also be good but that's also pretty long, about the same as HxH. Prince of Tennis (another long series) is like Dragon Ball in tennis form, he might like that.

Some of the short ones I might be able to suggest are:
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team (you might want to check it first, just to make sure)
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (it's a movie that's made from CG, it's action-packed)
Black Cat (he'll probably like, but maybe check appropriateness to make sure)

There are probably more, but nothing comes to mind atm.
Cannibalism is the ultimate form of love.

Yeah, I'm only gonna be home two weeks, so Bleach might be a little long.  I've watched Advent Children with him, and he liked it (a whole lot more than me, but thats probably because he didn't care at all about the nonsensical story).  I'll check out 8th MS Team (I've seen it, but it was a while ago) and Black Cat.  I might save prince of Tennis for when I'm going to be home a little bit longer.

You won't go wrong if you grabbed some of the Ghibli movies and if you can find this one I think he would enjoy it:- The Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas, it's 13 ep's long, no swearing and quite engaging. :)

I'd strongly suggest Mahou Shoujo Tai (which should not be confused with Mahou Shoujo Ai). Each episode is 9 minutes long, lots of bright colors, its pleasant, and engaging. No giant robots though. It contains zero objectionable moments. You could watch this with your a religious fanatic and they probably wouldn't complain.

Try Berserk, he is going to love it.

On a serious note: Bleach or Naruto - great "kiddie" animes, but not mecha
 - Vandread
 - Zoids: Genesis
 - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
And maybe Gundam

There are religious fanatics who will attempt to ban anything with magic, witch, wizard, etc. in the title, and nationalist fanatics who would ban anything Japanese, just like those damn Hondas and Toyotas built in foreign parts such as Indiana and Ohio.

I certainly second the recommendation.  Good show.

Ichigo Mashimaro would be great if he can stand girls and the occasional cerebral humor.  It's clean, fun, and short.

Yeah, Naruto is like crack to my little brother, but I haven't read anything good about the movies so I'm not bothering with them.  Youshinagas looks pretty intersting.  If Mahour Shoujo Tai features drag queens that might be a no go.  While I myself hold strong religious values, I'd only really be offended if it was something like hentai or the occult.  The only real reason to object to the drag queen would be age appropriateness.  Of course, if its something like Bugs dressing like a woman in Looney Tunes then that wouldn't really be an issue.  I guess I'll find out.

Unless New means "completely different" then that's way to violent....

He's certainly not a drag queen.  The only way you could possibly find offense in it is if you find any sort of clothing crossover offensive, even if it's used only as a disguise.

Try Berserk, he is going to love it.

You may want to be careful of showing him Berserk.  It depends on how much violence he can handle.  Also...

Screw it, kids know about stuff at younger and younger ages anyway.  I'll just grab Mezzo Forte.

Try Zoids New Century/Zero. I take it with me whenever I babysit. Haven't overseen a child yet who won't sit in front of this anime for several hours.

You can try .hack//SIGN (all the .hack(s) seemed to be good) also possibly D.N.Angel.

Might I recommend Hare and Guu the Tv series. Its a really funny anime a bit annoying at times but none the less very funny. I would recommend Hare and Guu Deluxe and Final but since you little brother is only eight. I wouldn't watch it while hes around.
