The same is going on for the original Gundam series, [EG] Zeta Gundam and Great Mazinga.

How are they in comparison to W-B's work?

Hey, I'm Yot-chan from Galaxy Network (I handle all the translations and QC issues: A couple of other guys do all the ripping and encoding).
If you just want to SEE the original Macross show, W-B or AnimeFriends is probably a better bet. The files are smaller, and W-B has the added attraction of the English dub. But I think our rips look better, and we're using the 2008 R2 DVD remaster, which isn't as colorful as the R1 remaster, but has A LOT more detail.
As for the subs, the translation is mostly a mashup of the AnimeEigo and ADV subs, with a few additions of my own in places where I think it's necessary (for example, some of the slang that both versions use sounds a little dated. Also, occasionally a line from the show will get reused later in Frontier, and I want to make sure that the same line works in both contexts...although, admittedly, that hasn't happened yet in the series).
But really, the SDFM remaster is just the icing on the cake. The REAL reason for Galaxy Network's existence will be released soon, and I think it's going to make old-timey fans very, very happy.

Funny, I just finished watching Macross Frontier for the 4th time today... ;D
Seriously, you can enjoy the story without watching the original Macross. What you need to know is very well explained in the beginning of each episode. There is a huge back story in episode 12 about Macross Zero, plus lots of small details from Macross and even Macross 7, but it's not important on the first watch.
I have watched Robotech first (when I was 12), then straight Macross Frontier and Macross Zero. Then, I've watched the movie "Do you remember love?", Macross Plus, Macross 7 (the firsts 15 episodes are such a pain to watch) and it's movies, OVAs... to really enjoy Macross F to the fullest.
Yeah, I also consider myself a 'tard for watching it that much... :D

Yeah, the main character of Macross 7 was kinda annoying^^

I recently just started watching Macross F without having watched any other macross (or indeed, any other mecha series) at all. I just read up on the wikipedia article to understand the basic condition of the universe and the origin of the name and such, and between that and the simple introductions they give at the beginning of the series, I think I understand quite enough. I know there are probably some specific references they are making that I am not getting or something, but it certainly isn't affecting my impression of the series (I am enjoying it by the way).
Later on, after all, if you watch the other series being mentioned here, you will just get all the references then and such, so what's the problem?
tl;dr, I say, Go for it!

I watched Macross F before I watched the other series and I am sure the only the thing I didn't understand at first was the phrase "Yack! Deculture!" of the Zentradi. Other than that I think there wasn't any reference to the past.
