Macross F, is there need to see prequels?
bellx:
macross zero is a great OVA and has good animation, a must watch if you like macross Frontier.
himitsu:
Probably not worth a new topic, but it could be useful to point out that a group is redoing the first Macross series in much better quality.
The same is going on for the original Gundam series, [EG] Zeta Gundam and Great Mazinga.

I have watched all series recently :) And no, it's not necessary. In Macross F there are scenes that pay a hommage to older series like the original 36 ep series 'SDF Macross' and the movie 'Do you remember love?' Some characters resemble ones in the original series. As omegadragon already said 'Do you remember love', 'SDF Macross' and 'Macross Zero' could be watched but aren't a must-see.
In case you want to watch the above mentioned series I recommend to read the Wikipedia-articles about Macross (or just Macross F) so that you can fully grasp the parallels^^
A great universe. Yack! Deculture! :P

How are they in comparison to W-B's work?

If you truely want to watch quality Macross
check out Macross Plus.
I have watched Macross F at least 3 times or so now but never got around to finishing it lolz. It has great animation but tward the end it gets a little stale. Not the story line the animation is sort of looped.. Meh then again i havent seen the ending so what do i know.
BUT YOU have to see Macross Plus.. Best Macross evah.. and yes i think its bettah then Macross Zero... thou that first secene when he is int he f14 is pritty hawt

Watching Macross - Do You Remember Love might help ease the shock of suddenly seeing giant aliens living along side humans, since all they do is give you a quick intro at teh start of each series.
There's also a major reference to Macross Zero. Apart from that I don't think you really need to any other backstory to enjoy it (actually if you're not fussy about backstories you can just watch it without worrying too).
