Yep, today a new war started.

What happened so far:

Georgia used heavy artillery to bomb the shit out of south Ossetian capital Tskhinvali. The number of civilian casualties is still unknown, but locals are talking about thousands. Among them Russian peacekeeping forces.

Russia bombs Georgian military airport and a military base, Georgia reports 3 casualties, Russia denies the bombings.

About 90% of south Ossetian citizens are granted Russian citizenship and can escape north if they want to. Red Cross asks Georgia to give a refugee corridor for civilians to escape.

Georgians claim that south Ossetia will soon be liberated and Russia accuses Georgia of ethical cleansing of ossetian ethnic group.
Western world asks Russians, Georgians and Ossetians to stop fighting and find a peaceful resolution.

Do they think that NATO/USA will come to save them? they are just asking trouble with that bombing. RM-70 is not best choice if you are going to strike rebels who are camping near urban area... probably lot of civilian casualties in Ossetia.

Finland has same MRLs system and it's NOT accurate.

From what they gathered so far the estimated casualties are about 1400. It is still too soon to tell.

The US couldn't do anything if we wanted to. Even our reserves are already deployed elsewhere. It looks like Georgia's only hope is the head of the EU, the French.

Russians have finally retaliated.

It is reported that many Russian bombers have bombed many areas in Georgia including it's capital Tbilisi so the parliament is evacuated. Russian tanks are already on their way to reinforce the forces of south Ossetian military forces who are fighting in the streets of Tskhinvali.

Personally I think that the way this looks now, the conflict will end within a week.

The US would not start WW3 because of some small shitty country like Georgia, neither will EU. Also EU is not a military alliance. Besides why the fuck would Europe fuck up relations to Russia and it's gas because of Georgia. Actually I think EU knew that this could happen and that is why they rejected Georgia as EU member.

Now the main question is: will Russians take only Ossetia and Abkhasia after they win this, will they take all of Georgia or will they grant those two nations sovereignty or some kind of autonomous solution?

Actually, there's several things that the US could do. Just nothing involving troops on the ground, we could still tomahawk the ever living fuck out of 'em.

And the EU is, as Ace said, not a military alliance. If the EU was attacked by someone they'd have to rely completely on NATO forces to protect them. And most NATO forces are, amazingly enough, American.

Holy shit this is updated quickly.

Anyway Georgian army retreated, all of their tanks are destroyed and the city of Tskhinvali is secured by Ossetian and Russian armed forces. This would seem to end shortly after it started, but the Russian president said that he will "punish the aggressors" which I would interpret as "fuck the Georgian president in the ass".

You should know the game, when US/Russia goes to war, then the other one can't get involved directly. US goes to war in Vietnam, Russia supplies NVA with equipment, Russia goes to war in Afghanistan, US gives supplies and training. When that rule of the game is broken, then we have WW3 and god help us all.

could the US mount 24/7 carrier strikes on Russia in addition to 24/7 airbase strikes? yes. would it make sense for us to do so? no.

I was responding to semnae's assumption that the US has no reserve offensive military capabilities right now because we are too bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Here's some maps for people like me who are not particularly familiar with the region and need to get familiar fast.

The solid red line marks the general path of Russia's main assault force, consisting mostly of tanks, and the dotted red line marks their expected approach to T'bilisi. Poti and Batumi are major ports that have received a missile pounding. Skmtredia East is also a target because of its major airport. Tskhinvali is the regional capitol of South Ossetia, which both sides are claiming control over. I'm betting the Russian have it, or if they don't, they at least have it hopelessly surrounded. Russian tanks are moving very fast, and have already passed the checkpoint in Gori. The big win will be T'bilisi, the nations capitol. At the rate they are going, Russian tanks should be there by tomorrow.

I'll post some close up strategic maps of Tskhinvali and T'bilisi later.

I wanted to comment that actually. I mean would US actually leave their own homeland defenceless because of Iraq and Afghanistan? I am sure that there are a lot of regular + reserves in US right now.

Indeed. Russia can't afford for this conflict to linger, and so they are running a speed war. They are going to try and take the capital while international attention is still on the opening Olympic ceremonies in Beijing.

Let me get this straight...

Russia is fighting for a break away country, from a break away country that used to belong to them.

It seems they protected the break away country that they like right now... Are they trying to take back over Georgia? Why else would they march on the capital? Or is Russia just ticked off right now and they want Georgia to squeal?

Georgia started this war by bombing urban area's in South Ossetia and killed 10 russian peacekeepers. South Ossetia wants independence but Georgia wont allow it...

McCain has made a statement urging Russia to withdraw.
Obama has condemned Russia and urges restraint.

How are Georgia's neighbors, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan reacting? What about the BTC pipeline? The BTC is the major prize if Russia conquers Georgia. Imagine Russia controlling a large portion of the US's oil flow.

IMHO the Russians - but only as long as they're giving the South Ossentians what they want. I'm no expert on Georgian politics though. =x

I heard on the radio this morning Georgians are claiming hundreds of Georgians (and by Georgians, I don't mean South Ossentians) were killed in Russian airstrikes - I haven't found anything to support that. Pretty sure it's a journalist being a fucking moron.

Amusing that they (Russians) are fighting for the rights of the South Ossentians to secede while fighting against similar movements in Chechnya.
