Upbeat/Triumphant/Epic Anime Songs
« on: November 07, 2008, 03:16:25 AM »
I am looking for Japanese songs in anime that have a upbeat/triumphant/epic feel to them. I don't know any other way really to describe this, other than to provide examples.

Motteke! Sailor Fuku by Aya Hirano (Lucky Star OP) <- Best example
Hare Hare Yukai by Aya Hirano (Haruhi EP)
Hanamaru Sensation by Little Non (Kodomo no Jikan EP)

Anyone know any good ones?

Card Captor Sakura - Catch You Catch Me, Tobira wo Akete (OP1 and OP2; OP3 doesn't really fit the description, but if you want to check it out it's Purachina)
Chrno Crusade - Tsubasa wa Pleasure Line (OP)
Read or Die - Read or Die (no singing though, just epic OP music)

[edit] Youtube links added.

When you say epic, I thought you meant Lord of the Rings 'epic'. Not... epic (win).

All the music from the Shakugan no Shana series.
The Toradora OP.

Hold Nothing: If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha. If you meet your ancestor, kill your ancestor. Free of everything, bound by nothing, live your life as it is.

This.

The OP's of Gundam Seed might fit your description aswell.

Ah, then I might as well add Gundam 00's OP in as well. L'Arc-En-Ciel's "Daybreak's Bell" FTW :D

I didn't like OP2 as much as OP1, but it might be someone else's cup of tea.

Oh, and not forgetting all the singles from Macross Fronter ;)

Songs like Motteke! Seifuku are not that common, but perhaps Mahou Tsukai Tai's OP, "I Wanna Do More" (I know, I know... >_>) might be similar enough for you.

I've been partial to the type of songs that have upbeat trumph to them without the "epic" because the epic seems to make them feel more "distant/pretentious" to me rather than personable.   I assume you are not translating the words but going after the heft of the music and vocals itself.   I'd like to comment that your description is worringly close to how many people think of "fight songs" although I don't think that is quite what you wanted - I assume you wanted a more "spiritual" aspect to the song as well.

End theme to Bakuretsu Tenshi (ripped by Xylomen) - Under the Sky (artist - Cloudica):
[Xylomen] Bakuretsu_Tenshi_-_ED_ Under the Sky(Cloudica).mp3

assertion of spirit song from Bubblegum Crisis:  Devil and Angel's Kiss:
(also part of a nice music video originally released on laserdisc)
07._knight_sabers_-_akuma_to_tenshi_no_kisu_[devil's_and_angel's_kiss].mp3

They don't have to all be tough/strong/vicious epic do they?  If not, consider how this builds up:
AngelicLayer - Ame Agari.mp3

If you are looking for only instrumentals, then consider the final fantasy black mages (on box) and a number of game soundtracks, among them Grandia II (among which "Granas Saber" is nice).

Caramell dansen. That shit is good. Better than Numa numa. :P

By the way, have you checked out the Bleach and Naruto/Shippuden OPs and EDs? Those are somewhat close to what you're looking for depending on which one. Also, I think deathnote might hold something as well.

Hell, I might as well toss in Initial D. Eurobeats make you want to drift in vans (which I've done), drive fast and giggle.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Maria+Holic OP is EPIC. Epic enough to spell it with all caps.

For the other kind of epic (majestic and such), the Sousei no Aquarion OP/EDs work very well. But that's mostly because they form a part of the thematic album that Yoko Kanno composed (with Hogaari Hisaki, but I never listen to his stuff).

Some good ones have already been listed but I'm always partial to the upbeat Kannagi opening song. Sung by the voice actor herself. I like when voice actors sing songs from their own anime like Aya Hirano etc..

The OP for the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles OVA had something like that feeling, Synchronicity by Yui Makino - Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto OP - Kouya Ruten has a similar feel.
