Just went into 30 minutes of this movie ... once again, Production I.G has done an outstanding job. I've been keeping up with them. They're one of the best anime creators I have yet to experience. Sound was very, very detailed in the movie unlike many anime series/movies I have seen. The animation was done very well. No comment on story, plot and character as of yet until I finish it.
If you want to see something similar to this, go grab Seirei no Moribito. It should be on Boxtorrents as DVD versions (26 episodes). I'll comment in here once I finish watching this movie.

^ So, Tatsujin, your comments please! I'm dying to hear what you thought of it. ;)
I.G definitely did a stellar job with the animation in this one, the one scene where they're flying over the coastline looks more like a hi-def video than animated. That said, I'm not sure if the characters are supposed to look so flat and pasted on, if it was, it was an interesting directorial decision. Also, the main female lead looks quite like the Major, don't you think?

One thing I haven't been able to resolve is... the film's own fetishization of war and war machines. It's practically CGI war porn at points.
Yet it portrays a future society's similar fascination with war as entertainment in a seemingly critical manner.
Was the director making a statement here, that we as viewers are just as guilty of this "consumption" of hyper-real violence as the society portrayed in the film? Or did direction just get "carried away" with a big CGI budget that undercut the sociological critique?

One question, though: why the hell is the THORA release so damn big? >4GB for a movie in 720p? o.O

The sheer amount of motion in this movie is tremendous. Everythingmoves. Smoothly.
Compare 240 MB for an average 720p Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou episode vs 350 MB for an average Macross F ep or Gundam 00 ep.
