The Greatest Romantic Comedy Anime?
« on: December 19, 2008, 11:30:06 PM »
I just want everyone's opinion on what they think the best romantic comedy anime out there is.

Personally, I'm watching Itazura na Kiss right now and I absolutely love it (no pun intended). It is by far one of the best romantic comedies I've seen thus far, and ranks up there in my favorite anime. I've seen a number of anime and they all seem to have a similar setup and storyline, but this is one of the first I've seen of its kind.

I just finished DLing that one, I'm excited to watch.

Best romantic comedy that I've seen?
Midori no Hibi
Great characters, great plot, great emotional variety.

Clannad is a close 2nd...

Midori no Hibi was pretty good, but it just doesn't have the "epic romantic comedy" feel to it. I'm still in the middle of Clannad and thinking "meh".

Clannad was kinda disappointing to me as well, though not terrible.  Kanon is one of my favorites and Air was good, but Clannad just didn't do much for me.

Nodame Cantabile was good and probably will get some mentions.  Honey and Clover would probably be my choice except that I'm not sure it'd really be classified as a romantic comedy.  It certainly has romance and comedy, but its more of a coming of age story I think.  So Kare Kano probably gets my vote, despite the last 6 or so eps being less than spectacular.

I'm also watching Itazura na Kiss atm, and its good.  Only about 5 eps into it though so don't have a good idea of where it ranks.

I also have to second your comment of Kare Kano. It started out fairly decent, but by the end I realized that I had just wasted several hours of my life. Nodame Cantabile and Honey and Clover are on my watch list atm.

Another anime that hasn't been mentioned yet is Lovely Complex. I watched the first couple of episodes, but the art is really hard to watch and distracts from the story. I may have to come back and do a proper watching of the series at some point.

Lovely Complex was worth watching, my only complaint would be that a lot of the humor is repetitive.  Not exactly the same jokes over and over, but mostly variations on the same couple of themes.  I figured I'd get tired of it at some point, but it somehow managed not to get stale.

ToraDora! is what I'm really enjoying right now.  I second Nodame Cantabile.

But I'll give Itazura na Kiss a try.

I define epic to be something that is so amazing that it is hard to put into words. Originality and entertainment play a key role in what I call "epic anime".

I have a hard time getting back into something I leave halfway so I won't be watching Toradora until I can watch the entire series (all episodes aired). From what I've seen and heard so far, I have high hopes for it.

In one word I would define epic as... Yuri  :D

Don't really kno how you define what is a romantic comedy??? Love Hina?? Full Metal Panic?? Or something abit more serious on the romance side??

Haaa, Midori no Hibi.. Just for the simple fact of the cover picture is just simply wrong.. Though if it were a girl with the same puppet then yeah... But no I can't bring myself to watch it.

ehhh so basically you want us to suggest/recommend you good Romance/Comedies?  Shouldn't this thread be in the recommendations forum?

There's already a post for Romantic/Comedy type animes with a massive list of great suggestions.

Here's the link: http://forums.boxtorrents.com/index.php?topic=15199.0

In this post, you'll find replies from people who have already begun replying here with the same answers they already gave there.  ^.~.  But check it out cus there's probably a good 100 suggestions for Romantic/Comedy type anime.

For me that would be MariMite and Lovely Complex (and KareKano, though I'm not going to talk about it here). MariMite probably doesn't fall in the romcom genre (more towards rom side), but it made me laugh enough.

I liked Lovely Complex, mainly because it didn't make me gag all the time like Ichigo 100% and other titles did (the anime, not the manga; and yes I know the manga is far better). There's still the Coincidental Meeting plot device and a few other devices scattered around, but they're more believable and not so eyeroll-ish. Also, no guy-tripping-and-falling-over-girl plot devices, no non-obligatory pantsu shots, not too much of guy-doing-dumb-stuff, etc.

And for once, the male protagonist is actually kinda cool; aside from his seeming lack of awareness of romantic feelings he's probably one of the few romcom male protagonists I actually liked.

As for MariMite... I usually hate high school anime, but MariMite is so full of poise, grace and style, that it doesn't feel like HS anime at all (also helps that there's little focus on their HS life, more on their personal issues and club activities). Yuri drama = win.

TBH I haven't watched that much romcom yet; putting Itazura No Kiss on the to-watch list though.

@Reki34
Romatic Comedy on Wikipedia

@xerojwo
This isn't a recommendations thread, but rather a discussion thread. "cutsie fun" is not the same as romcom.

@kureshii
That is why I like Itazura na Kiss. Although it starts as a HS anime, the focus is more about the characters and how they move through their lives. It isn't ecchi at all, has no "sudden girlfriend appearance" as the main character is female (no "sudden boyfriend appearance" either), and most importantly, there really aren't very many "stereotypical" characters and plots.

By that logic, I'd say Midori no Hibi was pretty damn epic!  ;D
C'mon think about the prospect of the situation...

I'd have to throw in my 2cents for Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun.
I would definitely say that one was epic. Outrageous gags and storyline.
Extremely ecchi though...so....it's not for everyone.

Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun extremely ecchi? Mneah, no no no. And also, the romance genre was, from my opinion, a not so special part of the anime. It was very common, and with a default characteristic. Also, the comedy genre was, again, from my opinion, not quite on my taste, nothing special practically. But meh, my 2 cents 2.^^

Lovely Complex, to answer the question.

Man... There are a lot out there so it's hard to pick just one.

Toradora! as someone mentioned could be a contender but it has yet to end so it's still in limbo. This focuses more on the comedy aspect.

Clannad is up there too but focuses more on the drama/relationship part yet has a comedic background.

Nodame Cantabile is probably the favorite as it has a perfect mixture of both.

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka has nearly the same laugh:relationship ratio as Toradora but this all depends on the way it ends because it's still airing as well. If it wasn't for toradora, this probably would have the same hype/popularity.

I guess my vote for best romantic comedy within the last couple years would go to Nodame Cantabile. Though, all those I mentioned are easily in the top 10.

I actually didn't care for it too much either.  :D
But I thought it would definitely qualify as an 'epic' romance comedy.

Just finished love hina.
It was a bit repetative, but very funny.
Not necessarily epic though....

Toradora! has definitely been a surprise favorite for me so far. It's been a long time since I've been this into a show. It has some really great characters, and a lot of development. Also for anyone else following it, am I the only one that's going to go crazy waiting for subs on the next episode? (it airs Christmas eve >.>)

Well if you have take a very loose definition of both the comedy and romance part, I would have to say Spice and Wolf.

The reason I say loose is that while it has both romance and great comedy, its not a romcom. But at least it definitely fulfills the 'epic' requirement (IMO)
