I just finished Izatura Na Kiss today and I can easily agree that this is by and far the greatest (epic) romantic comedy I've ever seen and I'd be hard pressed to think it can get much better than this show was. From start to finish it was amazing. There was ZERO filler. Everything had pertinence to the overall plot. It had the comedy but didn't overdo it to the point that it cheesed the show.

They also didn't lead the audience on for 24 episodes with the hopes that the idiot love object will eventually see the light and return the love they've been receiving for over 12 hours of our lives. This one had a few episodes of that and kept things fresh by actually spinning a different plot based upon that love between the two lead characters.

This show also did something I've never seen done before. They progressed through the lead characters' lives together and made a divine showing of the human element that so many romantic comedies are too busy ignoring with filler episodes and catch lines to expound upon.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Well well, I see only positive descriptions for Itazura na Kiss. I downloaded the show, like, 2 months ago and I have it burned on a DVD, but I totally forgot to watch it. After TTGL, Itazura na Kiss will be my next show that I'll be watching.^^

Itazura na Kiss is actually pretty good. I liked it to an extent. The music is a serious beat that made me download the entire OST. There are two songs that I love and they are 5/5 in my rating on Windows Media Player.

Greatest Romantic Comedy ... guys, come on. Welcome to NHK! I've seriously laughed so hard I paused on a whole bunch of episodes to clear up my voice and to calm myself down. Hands down, one of the best series I've experienced ... I have no "one" anime as best for romantic comedy anime.

Sounds to me that you are confusing "comedy with romance" and "romantic comedy". There is a difference.

I'm not sure right now what I'd place into the category of Greatest. But...

Toradora! Is my current favorite, I really enjoy this show and I didn't think I would.

I avoided Lovely Complex because I didn't like the animation, then I finally sat down and watched it and really enjoyed it.  The comedy did get repetitive to me around the middle, but eventually broke out some, I think.

Maison Ikkokou is a great classic.

Midori No Hibi is almost epic.  I 've DL'd that, erased it, then gave it a second chance and ended up buying it.  The way that anime deals with ecchi material annoys me, and I still skip over some sections, but the overall anime is great.

Some of the ones I like to watch (no order):
Kasimasi - it's just cute; it's a love comedy imo
Seto no Hanayome - it gets ridiculous at the end, but that's part of the fun.
Sumomomo Momomo - I realize many people have an issue with this, but certain episodes are incredible.

I'm going to go watch "Itazura na Kiss"

Ah, how I hate these situations. As I stated before in a previous post, I finished TTGL and I started watching Itazura na Kiss. I watched 3 episodes so far, and darn, it really isn't what I expected. More exactly, it doesn't fit my tastes so far. >.< The plot doesn't attract me, neither does the graphic stile... but I'll just stick in my head the idea that I'm judging the anime to early, so, I'll just watch up to episode 10, and if the plot gets more interesting, I'll continue watching it. Ah, and I've put my hopes in it, especially since Ouran High School Club was a dissapointment and I dropped it after ep. 4, and this happened yesterday.
Any advises, or spoilers that could keep me watching Itazura na Kiss? >.>

I just want everyone's opinion on what they think the best romantic comedy anime out there is.

Personally, I'm watching Itazura na Kiss right now and I absolutely love it (no pun intended). It is by far one of the best romantic comedies I've seen thus far, and ranks up there in my favorite anime.
Where exactly is it romantic? oO
He is just some arse for most of the time. His behavior doesn't have anything to do with romance (ignoring her even in private and in public). There are only few times he does show affection, even after their marriage.
Lame. Unrealistic.

I liked Kare Kano and Ayashi no Ceres (latter is pretty slushy-mushy and does have quite some plot holes - nonetheless I loved it :S).

Nodame Cantabile has no romance except in the very last episode. For all eps before it's much like Itazura na Kiss with a one sided love/affection. Just when Itazura na Kiss starts Nodame does stop.

Honey & Clover is one of my faves too, has a lot of 'coming of age' but the relationships don't go as far as in Itazura na Kiss (I think most don't, the only point Itazura na Kiss excels and is very special in) but are further than in Nodame (which isn't hard to reach).

ef - a tale of memories has a more matured theme too and I kinda liked it - at least one of the two stories presented there.

Same goes for Paradise Kiss.

For everything I said above I talked about the animes, not the mangas.

You obviously haven't seen season 2, the live action or read the manga...

Season 3 is released fall of 09, as well as 2 more live action movies.

naoki irie is a male tsundere. that's something that you rarely see in an anime.

Ok. I've seen 10 episodes. I've had enough of Itazura na Kiss. I've dropped it, and I don't regret it. Though, there is something I liked from this anime, and that is the ending song.
Also,I agree with the first part of Lizzy's post concerning the romantic part of Itazura na Kiss. And with this, I made my last post on this topic.

Obviously... and I said so too.

However, watching 22 episodes (it has 23 in total) with no romance when it was labeled as romance was greatly disappointing and the last episode did what have? One hug from him. Wow. It was sweet but way too long for this and the moment also too short to call it a romance anime. FAIL

I dl'ed Nodame Cantabile Paris, but didn't start it yet. Will do after New Year because except for the missing romance it was a good anime... funny, good animation and best is the classical music part.

Lizzy, this goes for Nodame Cantabile also. Just replace Naoki Irie with Chiaki Shinichi. The difference though, is that Chiaki doesn't really ignore Megumi. It's more like getting angry at her. There are quite a few hints that Chiaki's relationship with Megumi develops from a one sided love to a more mutual understanding, though, but I'm assuming you missed out on these cues?

At the very least, Chiaki does not suddenly become affectionate for Megumi, as shown by a couple of scenes where he actually cares for her well-being and her piano playing. Just because the only physical way he shows his affection for her is by hugging her doesn't mean it's the only way he shows that he cares about her, you know.

I would hardly say that Nodame Cantabile's romantic aspect was "FAIL." In fact, I thought it was balanced well with the comedy to be a fun and lighthearted watch, all the while being touching at a few parts with the relationships. I actually thought that Chiaki and Megumi not being too "touchy-feely" was a good thing, because (it may just be me) but I don't really think heavy romance and comedy mixes well.

The second season was, in my opinion, nowhere near as good as the first. You might like it more, though, because it was definitely more romantic than its predecessor. However, I found that the second season suffered from pacing problems as a couple episodes felt rushed. Chiaki and Megumi's relationship does get some development, and it does leave the viewer wanting more for the third season, though, so overall it wasn't bad.

So, my nomination for greatest romantic comedy is Nodame Cantabile. It's not perfect, but it's one of the few anime that has made me laugh and warmed my heart at the same time.

As for a couple of the others that were mentioned, they were good too, but I just didn't find them as enjoyable as Nodame.
Also, Toradora would have a possibility of getting second in my book, but its not finished yet, so I can't really judge it this soon.

But Nodame C. wasn't even a light romance. Even up to ep 22 he pretty much denied having anything personal to do with Megumi and I think even in ep 22 he said he wouldn't care about her (disappearing and such). He was impressed by her piano playing and cared about her talent.
What was behind all this was revealed (kinda) in the last episode. Even then I couldn't really tell whether he loves her, likes her or just doesn't want to miss her piano playing. The comics at the end while the credits were displayed told more about it than the entire series.

Itazura na Kiss did at least have a love relationship quite early (unexpectedly), and even beyond a marriage (which is totally rare - pity the chars were so absurd/unrealistic).
For the romance part I don't like either Nodame C. nor Itazura  na Kiss. Latter is even pretty absurd in character development. So I wouldn't recommend neither of them to people that are looking for a romance + comedy type of anime.
Since I was esp. looking for a Josei anime that is somewhat funny (not too extremely) and has a romance involved and got Nodame recommended. I was looking forward it and the first episode was so entertaining and promising... but... I got disappointed :(
Nodame C. was a typical case of unfulfilled expectations.

Sequels are often worse the the first season, the only exception I watched so far was Honey & Clover... I liked the 2nd season much more there ^^

As a light romance I see animes like Planetes.

I think yer overextending what romance truly is.

It doesn't always have to be a romance straight out of a Harlequin novel. Romance can be something as simple as watching a one sided love bloom into something more. It can be enjoying two characters develop a stronger bond between one another as their love matures.

A romance does NOT have to revolve around a couple announcing their unrequited love for one another over and over. Followed by kissing/hugging/love-making/etc.

So look beyond the black-n-white of society's definition of romance and you'll see the true beauty behind such epic series as Nodame Cantible and Itazura Na Kiss. It's in their subtle love that truly defines their greatness.

(click to show/hide)

To the poster who only gave it 11 episodes: you're 2 episodes from the epic-ness of this series. I'd recommend giving it till 13/14 to decide if this anime isn't for you.

Well a romance involves two people in my opinion, that is also my expectation. You can't say that you've a romance (or are in a romance) when it's only you. A one-sided affection is no romance for me. One person ignoring the other pretty much is also no romance for me.

The clinging all over a person and such is more the Shoujo genre, isn't it? ;)

But the title of this thread is best "romantic comedy". You have to dilute some of the romance and comedy to get a perfect 50/50 split of both.
