He is just some arse for most of the time. His behavior doesn't have anything to do with romance (ignoring her even in private and in public). There are only few times he does show affection, even after their marriage.
Lame. Unrealistic.

naoki irie is a male tsundere. that's something that you rarely see in an anime.

Lizzy, this goes for Nodame Cantabile also. Just replace Naoki Irie with Chiaki Shinichi. The difference though, is that Chiaki doesn't really ignore Megumi. It's more like getting angry at her. There are quite a few hints that Chiaki's relationship with Megumi develops from a one sided love to a more mutual understanding, though, but I'm assuming you missed out on these cues?

Obviously... and I said so too.

However, watching 22 episodes (it has 23 in total) with no romance when it was labeled as romance was greatly disappointing and the last episode did what have? One hug from him. Wow. It was sweet but way too long for this and the moment also too short to call it a romance anime. FAIL

I dl'ed Nodame Cantabile Paris, but didn't start it yet. Will do after New Year because except for the missing romance it was a good anime... funny, good animation and best is the classical music part.

At the very least, Chiaki does not suddenly become affectionate for Megumi, as shown by a couple of scenes where he actually cares for her well-being and her piano playing. Just because the only physical way he shows his affection for her is by hugging her doesn't mean it's the only way he shows that he cares about her, you know.

I would hardly say that Nodame Cantabile's romantic aspect was "FAIL." In fact, I thought it was balanced well with the comedy to be a fun and lighthearted watch, all the while being touching at a few parts with the relationships. I actually thought that Chiaki and Megumi not being too "touchy-feely" was a good thing, because (it may just be me) but I don't really think heavy romance and comedy mixes well.

The second season was, in my opinion, nowhere near as good as the first. You might like it more, though, because it was definitely more romantic than its predecessor. However, I found that the second season suffered from pacing problems as a couple episodes felt rushed. Chiaki and Megumi's relationship does get some development, and it does leave the viewer wanting more for the third season, though, so overall it wasn't bad.

So, my nomination for greatest romantic comedy is Nodame Cantabile. It's not perfect, but it's one of the few anime that has made me laugh and warmed my heart at the same time.

As for a couple of the others that were mentioned, they were good too, but I just didn't find them as enjoyable as Nodame.
Also, Toradora would have a possibility of getting second in my book, but its not finished yet, so I can't really judge it this soon.

Lizzy:
But Nodame C. wasn't even a light romance. Even up to ep 22 he pretty much denied having anything personal to do with Megumi and I think even in ep 22 he said he wouldn't care about her (disappearing and such). He was impressed by her piano playing and cared about her talent.
What was behind all this was revealed (kinda) in the last episode. Even then I couldn't really tell whether he loves her, likes her or just doesn't want to miss her piano playing. The comics at the end while the credits were displayed told more about it than the entire series.

Itazura na Kiss did at least have a love relationship quite early (unexpectedly), and even beyond a marriage (which is totally rare - pity the chars were so absurd/unrealistic).
For the romance part I don't like either Nodame C. nor Itazura  na Kiss. Latter is even pretty absurd in character development. So I wouldn't recommend neither of them to people that are looking for a romance + comedy type of anime.
Since I was esp. looking for a Josei anime that is somewhat funny (not too extremely) and has a romance involved and got Nodame recommended. I was looking forward it and the first episode was so entertaining and promising... but... I got disappointed :(
Nodame C. was a typical case of unfulfilled expectations.

Sequels are often worse the the first season, the only exception I watched so far was Honey & Clover... I liked the 2nd season much more there ^^

As a light romance I see animes like Planetes.

I think yer overextending what romance truly is.

It doesn't always have to be a romance straight out of a Harlequin novel. Romance can be something as simple as watching a one sided love bloom into something more. It can be enjoying two characters develop a stronger bond between one another as their love matures.

A romance does NOT have to revolve around a couple announcing their unrequited love for one another over and over. Followed by kissing/hugging/love-making/etc.

So look beyond the black-n-white of society's definition of romance and you'll see the true beauty behind such epic series as Nodame Cantible and Itazura Na Kiss. It's in their subtle love that truly defines their greatness.

(click to show/hide)It's in the subtleties like Naoki kissing Kotoko as she sleeps. Or when he sneaks in their first kiss after Kotoko angrily announced she would forget him and he said try forgetting this (more or less). It's in the whole aspect that all the while he's playing like he doesn't need her, but she's slowly become the air he breathes and he simply can't let go.
To the poster who only gave it 11 episodes: you're 2 episodes from the epic-ness of this series. I'd recommend giving it till 13/14 to decide if this anime isn't for you.

Lizzy:
Well a romance involves two people in my opinion, that is also my expectation. You can't say that you've a romance (or are in a romance) when it's only you. A one-sided affection is no romance for me. One person ignoring the other pretty much is also no romance for me.

The clinging all over a person and such is more the Shoujo genre, isn't it? ;)

But the title of this thread is best "romantic comedy". You have to dilute some of the romance and comedy to get a perfect 50/50 split of both.
