They both are psycho, for pretty much the same reasons. To be completely honest, Sekai was a more interesting character simply because (click to show/hide)she didn't walk around for half the series like a braindead statue talking to her cell phone.
Are you angry they went EMO mode in the anime ? or are you disappointed they didn't go "high school guy meets several cute girls and in the end doesn't choose any" mode ?
I'd say it's reasonably popular because they played their cards properly.

I can cackle fiendishly and think that it's all for naught, that there will be no happiness for them no matter how hard they try. That is also worth something.
