Gantz
« on: January 08, 2009, 12:26:18 AM »
I cannot believe i wasted 4 hours of my life watching this show.

Summed up:

fan service
unnecessary gore
unnecessary violence
unnecessary sexual content

and on top of it, the end of the show you don't learn anything. which makes everything even more pointless!

I haven't seen Gantz yet...
But it's an interesting view coming from someone who is (obviously) a fan of Elfen Lied.

But, in the case of Elfen Lied, the violence, gore, sexuality was all part of the story in a meaningful way.

Interesting.  ::)

Elfen Lied actually had an interesting plot that kept you wanting to watch. Gantz was a pointless 26 episodes of weak attempts at character development and repetitive ideas and violence. The few questions that did keep you watching were never even answered! That show is the epitome of fan service.

I'm with with harry on this one.
I hate pointless bullshit in anime.
I love when they incorporate nudity, violence, etc as part of a meaningful and interesting story.
(Elfen Lied, Saikano: both prime examples.)

Looks like I'll be adding Gantz to my "Do not watch" list.
Thanks for the heads-up.

I think Gantz suffered from the desire to be as dark as possible - they should have remembered, all things in moderation. The lacklustre ending could be attributed to the realities of anime production, I don't really know, but it seriously hampered the show.

The manga has a long and twisted plot which suited it well, although it too suffers from a heavy concentration of gratuitous content.

The anime tried to be dark and creepy and scary and crazy I think. MD Geist comes to mind in what it's trying to mimic in a different way. It also strays far from the original story line I hear...

All in all it's not a bad anime though. Good for a waste of time.

If you're willing to give Gantz the chance to redeem itself, read the manga.

It was so bad, that I found myself enjoying it. I would never in my life consider watching it again though.

The anime felt a bit pointless, I'll admit that, but the manga, now there's entertainment!

It's because of pacing issues. The anime was slow as a turtle, while the manga's having trouble slowing down at times :P

I don't believe you can have unnecessary sexual content in film or in life.

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

This is just another case of good manga turned into crappy anime. In the manga, they don't whine THAT much. They stretched those scenes way to long, and it became really boring. That and filler ending.

I do think the anime did a good job capturing some of the energy of the manga, especially in terms of the action sequences.

I still enjoy the OP every time I here it.

I watched the first three episodes or so a while back, and it sucked! Wow, I couldn't believe how absolutely bad this series was. And this was when the Anime Network or whatever was continually advertising it as a new show to watch.

Complete bust here.

The first 15-16 episodes of the show were great....the rest wasn't.  I wouldn't really call it full of fan service either, since that's more of an ecchi bullshit thing.....I'd call it mature.  Chick kills herself in bathtub while taking a bath....she's obviously gonna be naked, people have sex....they show pretty much everything.  If anything I like how the show portrays some sense of realism and how they they don't hide/censor anything.  The story line got fucked up around 16 because the manga wasn't and still isn't finished, so they made up some shit and that's why nothing is explained.  Heck just recently in the manga, they started explaining what gantz is.

Like other posters, I also find it interesting that you can like Elfen Lied and not this show for those reasons, especially the truly meaningless ecchi fanservice....and considering it's story is also weak IMO
