The nearest town with decent jobs is way too far out to bike to - that is, unless I start riding at 5:30 in the morning to arrive there at 8:30 or 9:00. Doesn't matter anyway since college is coming up in the fall.

So will one be able to install Win7 on machines that Vista couldn't be installed on? I wouldn't ask since typically requirements go up through OS releases, but I saw someone mentioning Win7 sporting reduced hardware requirements.

I feel pity for the poor buggers that paid Microsoft to test their beta of Windows 7 (I am talking about Vista), however now it seems the product is ready for the release any time now. I wonder how many versions they will have? I really hope only one, if they do that, they will have my respect.

I agree 100%. Honestly, there only needs to be two "editions" of Windows 7 at most: 32-bit and 64-bit, both at the current "Professional Premium" functionality level. But really, that's not even necessary; Apple has included both 32-bit and 64-bit variations on the same install disc for a long time now, so it's far from impossible.

They'll have at the minimum:

- Business
- Home

Seems like they'll also have:

- Media Center ( which should be part of HOME )
- Gimp (WHY?!)

If they want to do versioning - they should only do 2 at the most.

They're assholes though. Don't get your hopes up.

Do you really think 32/64 bit flavors are truly versions?

I don't. If they could be rolled into one DVD (32 or 64 bit install?) - I think it would be all good.

Yeah, just have the installer autodetect what to install (32 or 64), but put a little "Advanced" button in the lefthand bottom corner of the window that allows more advanced users to install their version of choice.

Ah that's no biggie. That "You're too retarded to run your PC. Would you like me to turn myself off for you?" crap is part of WHY my copy of Premium is sitting in a box, with the COA still attached to it, collecting dust. I've got my own security system - better than Windows.

It's called: Firefox, Nod32, and a SnapGear SG560 (This one, is a little overboard for the typical user. You can get an old SonicWall TZ for like - $20. Almost as good.)

I hate that crap asking me to "would you really like to install this?" - and then when it counts ( uh, spyware/badware/driveby installers) - it completely misses the ball. WTF?

Just screw MS's lame security. They should drop the price $100 so people can get their own at no extra cost.

I think windows 7 has lower requirements than Vista. Unless I read the requirements incorrectly.

fortunately in america dont know about the rest of the world, we can get the fancy OEM copies of software from sites like new egg. And cost goes from hundreds of dollars to like under 200 for the nice one

yea because its software that millions of copies are sold so development cost is covered VERY quickly and then its like zero cost and a little bit of updating

I'm suprised. It seems windows 7 is improving. I don't even recall dling any updates either. (with less BSOD).

Overall, 7 isn't too bad. I'd still take the functions of ubuntu over 7.... but as a secondary OS to dual boot, I'd say that 7 is a good choice and it sits right there with XP.

EDIT: I'd like to also mention that 7 doesn't try to fuck up the other partitions like Vista did.
