Underrated anime series or overrated

--- Quote from: maxxjulie on January 12, 2009, 12:10:17 AM ---this thread is going to annoy people. lots of great anime's will be called overrated and mediocre ones called underrated. someone already made the shocking claim that Naruto is overrated. it's really popular, but does that mean it's fans think it's the best anime or something? i love Naruto, but I'll never say it's the best. it's like pizza. is it the best food ever? no, but I love eating it more than anything. naruto is like pizza.

I think it's a combination of hating things just because they're popular and being so emotionally invested in the medium that you're getting things out of it that other people would find rather strange. It can't just be a cartoon you enjoy anymore, it's a life experience. And it probably ruins a lot of stuff for you because your expectations are so high. It's like walking into Die Hard expecting Citizen Kane. And it works on both ends, you have fans that gush so much over a series that to actually watch it is bound to disappoint.
Haruhi was an enjoyable series for me, but I liked the premise, and the execution. I don't feel a need to convert to Haruhism over it. For some people anime just can't be simple entertainment anymore. I'm not going to claim the medium is incapable of being deep, but some people are definitely reaching...

i have a few that might not be shockers.
So ill go through my list and cite a few reasons why
NGE- overrated - i personally prefer alot of the "nge clones" to nge they just seemed like they 1 didnt have such awful endings that required movies and shit to end them properly, and i just enjoyed them more. This includes shows like rah xephon and fafner in the azure(how great is it that they not only kill off just about every main character BUT THEY END THE FUCKING SHOW, goes out with a big bang in robots vs alien hardcore action)
Haruhi - overrated - while its not exactly praised as the best thing ever oh wait some people do believe that and i think its mainly just me i just dont get it i watched it, it was OK, but nothing really mind blowing.
Really thats all i can think of for overrated shows atm.
For underrated the list is going to be a little longer i think.
Fafner in the azure - one of the NGE clones i pretty much said above why i liked it. Had twists turns and killing off of lots of main characters which always makes for fun
Heroic Age - it caught alot of flak because many of its aspects are fairly cookie cutter and textbook for its genre, but i think it was a damn good show had great robot fighting, and the only really negative part i could find was the ending when the newly crowned queen ups and leaves with the main character days after being crowned.
FUCK i cant think of anymore too bad its 3am or i might be thinking better, really i just saw this thread and it peaked my interest and then i had a brain fart while responding

Overrated = didn't enjoy it as much as others did
Underrated = Felt it was better than what others thought
Because you really can't argue against the popularity of a series, and it all comes down to your own personal likes and dislikes. So it obviously can't be put into either category based on views of the majority, but rather just by oneself or a few. So no one should take any of this seriously.
On that note, here are some of my personal list of shows that I didn't like as much as others:
--- Quote from: relic2279 on January 11, 2009, 02:18:50 PM ---Akira is one of the few I thought was overrated. Even when I first saw it in the 90's, I was like ok this is cool, but why is everyone going nuts about it, bigger question is, why do people still go nuts over it?
Naruto (the anime) is also overrated. The hype was deserved when the show first came out, and for the first 60-70 or so eps. But now it's blah and fillers.

Totally agree.
Akira - Kept me away from anime for quite a long time, when an otaku friend tried to convert me with this boring movie.
Naruto - I really enjoyed it when it started, but the later fillers and Shippuuden actually made me angry. Some of the worst storylines and animation of the latest years (I swear that it keeps getting progressively worse). It's hard for me to believe that people still follow it..well, actually support such blatant milking of fans (sadists).
I'll add Cowboy Bebop. What story? It's an episodic series with nothing worthwhile to remember. My guess is that it having a westernized feel allowing many newcomers to ease into anime, and it being a fav just by being one of the first.
What I feel are underrated or not seen as much as others:
Hikaru no Go - Many avoid it for being a long series and/or being about a board game. But it has some of the best character development and supporting cast with anime. Even though there is a ghost involved, it's one of the more realistic. Forget about it being about a game/sports and just watch it.
Princess Tutu - I'll admit that it's not for everyone, but hearing others claim how great the classical music is in Nodame should also check out this series. This bittersweet fairytale is not meant only for kids. I enjoyed the comic relief and loved the art style.
Kino no Tabi - I bought the slimpack set as soon as it came out. The episodes make you think long after it's over and Kino is no cookie cutter anime character. Quite fitting for someone to not prejudge different social standards.
Tytania and LoGH - Can't get any better than this for space operas in anime. Subtract Code Geass' over exaggerations and plotholes for more realism. But I can see those who don't like reading long dialogue to not fully enjoy it. Plenty of action only type elsewhere.
Toradora! - It is boggling that gg would drop this, but not everyone there felt the same since qq continued with it. I don't feel it yet should be called underrated. Like Haruhi, it will gain greater popularity toward the end and/or after the series is done. Toradora! is not just another tsundere show, it has a great script and a very likable cast.
Some other recent anime that I'd expect to be more popular: Casshern SINS, Hyakko, Eve no Jikan, Kara no Kyoukai, and Skip Beat!. But should wait and see, as more word about them goes around.

--- Quote from: maxxjulie on January 12, 2009, 12:55:48 AM ---everyone that's seen gankutuou thinks it's great I'm assuming. so how would it be underrated? it's not super popular cuz it's a serious anime with a story line and not brain dead fun. does that make it underrated cuz it's not as popular as Naruto?

From what I have read, a lot of people didn't like it due to it not being a good homage to the source material. I personally think if you are going to compare it to the book you shouldn't watch it in the first place.

That's because of the different creative influences that make up the anime. It's the same reason why people dislike film adaptations.
tyrionlannister:
Overrated: Gundam Wing.
For the life of me I can't understand why people think this is one of the best Gundam series ever. Never mind the UC series + OVAs, which actually have some of the most interesting and believable characters, I think it can't even stand up to Seed which, let's face it, except for the music was quite mediocre.
Overrated: Gundam 00
This has some of the most unlikable characters for "heroes" that I've ever seen in any anime. Besides the animation, which is quite good, despite starting to reuse cels (eg. ep 14 Tieria' double beam cannons attack and evade), the show has one of the most convoluted and ridiculous storylines ever, IMO topping even Code Geass, with robots that have crossed from real into super territory. All of the Gudam Meisters are mass-murdering hypocrites, some are schizophrenic and some are truly psychotic. The villains actually seem like better persons, if that's possible.
Underrated: Golgo 13
Its main flaw is the episodic nature, but still it offers a "James Bond without moral restraints" kind of experience which is quite exciting, and is also good to watch anytime because it doesn't require watching previous episodes. Also, great OP music.
Underrated: Legend of the Galactic Heroes main OVA + Gaiden
Most people are probably daunted by the 130 ep main OVA + many more for the various gaiden, but the truth is that it eases the viewers quite smoothly into its universe (with useful name cards ;D) and this is why not many people try it. It is truly a masterpiece in every sense possible: beautiful hand-drawn graphics, elegant and appropriate orchestral music, a great variety of interesting characters and an addictive and enticing storyline.
