im gonna chime in the whole bleach naruto comments for fun

Bleach - as said there is very little story anymore its basically like DBZ, they have a definitive story line but move it along SOOOOOOOOOO SLOW.

Naruto at least chases after the simple story they got, SASUKE IS GONE GOTTA GET HIM BACK, akatsuki wants the devil children(naruto and the likes) shenanigans and hi jinx ensue. Where as weve been at AIZEN TRYING TO KILL SOUL SOCIETY since well they saved rukia.
And while yes they both obviously need some filler to let the manga get ahead more. The story hasnt moved at all in bleach for quite a while its more or less pointless fighting.

Although i enjoy both series when they are not in filler and currently watch both weekly.
Thats just my take

I stopped watching Naruto around ep 40 (i think) of shippuudden when there was an episode on the bridge where...LITERALLY.N OTHING.HAPPENED.  I think at the end Naruto charged forward and smashed in to someone.  But it was literally 20 minutes of them looking at each other, and then that one attack.  It just reminded me too much of DBZ and them devoting a full episode to Goku just forming the spirit bomb (which incidentally is the episode that crushed the interest I had in DBZ).

Bleach, IMO, hasn't stooped to quite that level yet in order to keep the show moving at a slow enough pace for the manga.  The Aizen storyline is very long for sure, but there's only a finite number of Espada for them to kill between now and ultimately facing off with Aizen and the other traitor captains.  The whole chasing after Sasuke thing can go on forever with no real measurable progress toward the goal.  I will say this, Bleach's "comic relief" characters are maddening as hell and I want to stab them and the people who came up with them with a spork.

Bleach is my mindless martial arts anime of choice, but I don't think I've ever seen filler content added so poorly as the new captain arc. It's one thing to deviate from the manga content because you ran out of content, it's another to wait until you're partway though an arc to completely interrupt it with a bunch of stuff that does nothing but create a closed loop. It's less Bleach and more "stuff that could happen in the Bleach world but didn't".

Depend on what you are into, if you liked Naruto or DBZ you'll probably like Bleach.  I didn't care for it, but not my thing anyway.

When I first heard about Naruto, the only information I had about it was "Good show with ninjas". I was like, "Holy fucking shit, that sounds epic" and started looking online to DL it. I found this one site with a bunch of DLs for the show (back when many sites required anti-leech to be installed lol) and the layout was of Kakashi and it looked totally badass. My hopes for the show being a cool, violent, adult-ninja gorefest turned to mush when I saw the first episode...

Despite that minor setback I saw the whole thing (convincing myself it had to get better, which it did at times) and decided to read the manga due to fillers. I would have to say that at least now they are realizing they can put in fillers that add back-story! What an amazing concept!

As far as Bleach is concerned, the first time I saw it I was amazed at how good it was... until I saw middle to end of the second season and was like "... I wanna see an epic fight, not conspiratorial dialogue". Bleach got too out-of-hand with the Bounto Arc which ultimately caused me to stop watching it and begin reading it... which resulted in nearly the same end as the anime, just much later in the story.

The whole dialogue > story progression thing seems a little backwards to me... since they are going to do spoilers anyways, why not make the fights chock full of more epic-win fight scenes and bad-ass moves instead of "You bastard... trying to kill [insert respected person here]" and the typical response of them smirking and retorting about how corrupt that person is or how justified their claim to destruction is". I'm looking forward to the Shippuuden spoilers for the simple fact that it looks promising... ramen-making free ~.~

Dunno how it stacks up with Naruto; I haven't seen an episode since like the first exams or whatever. But while I don't really care for DBZ, I can agree it's very much a successor to shows like that. It's newer, so the animation isn't quite so speed line-y, and they don't resort to charging *quite* so frequently, but there's plenty of parallels if you wanted to find them.

I'd argue the worst part is simply the filler arcs. I think the current season is the 10th. Filler arcs account for three of them. The first filler arc took two seasons to run, so it's damn long. Marginal impact on the story after it resolves. Last filler arc interrupted an already in progress arc, totally disrupting the flow of the show for a bunch of content that had even less impact than the previous one, since after it finished they continued back where they left off.

Bleach is pretty predictable and there's nothing life changing about it, so if you're into anime for that, you won't find it, but it's a pretty solid action anime when they're not showing entire seasons of stuff that has no bearing on the story.

I can agree with Sakura588, sometimes they just fucking talk too much. Pretty much any soul society politicking is time wasting. Still, the fights are nice when they shut up.

Aaaah, cant help my self.

Overrated:

One Piece - Realy! everybody loves it, but i just cant stand it. Even my GF loves it, but i simpy dont get it. Too weard for me, i guess ???
Rurouni Kenshin - I dont get it at all. There isnt just anything for me in this Anime. Why everyone likes it, beats me.
Code Geass - For me, its just DeathNote wana be. Nothing special and litle boring.

I agree with the Naruto and Bleach, both were realy good at start, but after they got near to manga and fillers started they realy never came back good as they were before fillers. Naruto could get good again if it just follows manga, but bleach is realy slow even in manga.

Underrated:

GunGrave - One of the best in my books, but many of my friends dont like it, and i realy dont know why.
Seirei no Moribito - Love it, but others seem to think its boring.

There is many animes that are Over/underrated IMO, but i think its just a matter of taste.

They realy should start HxH again, i would have liked that more then Hajime no Ippo. So i guess HxH=Underrated and HnI=Overrated  ;D

Hah, love them both. What ever...

Bleach demonstrates that it is entirely possible for a 30 minute, weekly TV show to be comprised of less than 30% new material.  There have been episodes with more recap than new show.  Toss in the 11 - 12 minutes of OP/ED and commercials and you start to wonder how this crap was ever aired.

Bleach isn't as bad as One Piece in the ceaseless time-wasting department, I spent yesterday getting caught up on the anime - you're lucky to get ten minutes of anything, let alone a progression in the plot, the excessively long op/ed along with a meaningless 4 minute review of the One Piece plot, and another few minutes spent on the specific action of the last episode - it only took me three hours to watch 22 episodes. Nevertheless Bleach is getting worse with it recently during the Espada arch, I'm hoping the new season will be more progressive.

Bleach is all about style, about cool lines delivered at the right time, and some thoroughly entertaining fight sequences - it's not really trying to be more than it is.

All Jump series are pretty much a cookie cutter affair, with the exception of their none battle manga like Death Note, Sket-Dance, Gintama, To-Love-Ru, and Bakuman - a simple plot, colourful characters and lots of action for mind numbing entertainment, they're all fairly high in quality in terms of production value, and for the most part attempt to please their target audience of early to mid-teenage boys as best as possible. Which is why they're intensely popular, and I suppose that could lead to perceptions of being overrated, it's also why they don't shut down when they run out of material, they can get by on fandom.

and Skip Beat!.  But should wait and see, as more word about them goes around.

You know, this is probably the most underrated anime airing in my opinion. I think I've been one of maybe 2-3 people on box who have ever mentioned it. But the show is awesome. It gets so much better as the show goes on. It's probably right up there with toradora! I would describe it as an underdog comedy. If you haven't seen it yet, give it a watch. It has a 8.47 score on anidb.

Over-rated:
Akira: I guess since it was one of the major things back in the day to first come out. It's one of those animes I first heard about being big and often talked about.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya: I agree with this one, as I never watched it until quite a while ago, always heard stuff about this and how it was supposed to be amazing, but once I watched it, it wasn't as great as I thought it'd be.

Hellsing: Possibly? People often say it is great but when I think it over it just seemed alittle boring, but then again I did watch it in english dub, but I'll try to ignore that fact, the story was compelling enough for me and I can't really recall any great moments D:

Can't really think of underrated animes atm.

Random Comments:
Some one previously mentioned that Noir was underrated, I have to totally disagree, I watched it and it just felt so bland, it bored me so much, one of the key things I can clearly remember is whenever they shot their pistols they would always take the same stance and fire at a slow and consistant speed, which made the gunfights seem very boring.

lol another thing you notice is when some posters come to defend their favourite animes as hinted by their avatars :p

Akira is one of the few I thought was overrated. Even when I first saw it in the 90's, I was like ok this is cool, but why is everyone going nuts about it, bigger question is, why do people still go nuts over it?

Naruto (the anime) is also overrated. The hype was deserved when the show first came out, and for the first 60-70 or so eps. But now it's blah and fillers.

Underrated, well a few months ago I would have said Nodame Cantabile. But it seems like it's getting well deserved attention lately.

Now this is going to sound crazy, but Lucky Star is somewhat underrated to me. The people who see it, love it. But the problem is, most people can't get through the first ep of basically nothing + a little character development and thus bash it. I never bashed it myself, but I had to force myself to watch the first 3 eps and as I watched more and more eps I got used to the style, dialogue and non stop talking which seems to be the turn-off. And rightly so, if it wasn't for fanboys praising it, I probably would have stopped after the first ep. It has now become one of my favorites.

Ichigo Mashimaro seems a bit underrated to me too. I could be biased, because I think the show is hilarious, but I never see many recommendations or chatter about it.

The Seinfeld of aniem  ;D

IMO seinfeld doesnt hold up, simply not as funny if you go back now and watch it. It is incredibly dated feeling.

IMO curb your enthusiasm has a much more timeless feeling to most of it.

over rated:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Naruto / Bleach
Elfen Lied, i liked it. but i started watching it because it was the BEST THING EVER
according to the person that referred me to it. it was GOOD in my opinion

Under rated:
Rurouni kenshin, in this i'm biased,
it's the anime that got me really really hooked into anime.
atleast it's the aniem that made me realize that the stuff i was watching as a kid
was not just cartoons, and it is what made me experience a whole lot of goodness over the years.

Maze, don't hear much about this kind of old anime, but in my opinion it's funny and the action is also quite good.

On a side note.
a lot of under/over-rated stuff has more to do with the audience.
late teens (16+) / adults are not so easily amazed as young children, up till about
the age of 14 - 15. Adults will state what they think but mostly won't idolize a series
while children are prone to do that. so those anime's are mostly over-rated.

afcourse also perspective counts, when i was young (10) i LOVED pokemon
but now when grown up i still think it's good for the intended public, but not so much for me anymore.
this also goes for DB/DBZ/DBGT and Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh.
while when your young you probably can't relate to more serious anime
death note, i liked it, but when i was 10 probably not so much.

Cowboy Bebop (The movie - I haven't seen the series)
I was really excited about seeing this movie.  It seems to be on ever top 10 Sci-Fi anime list and it even appears on some top 10 anime lists.  However, I though it was terrible.  The writer didn't put a second of though into ... well anything.  The bad guy is identified by a dog.  Why was this seemingly ordinary dog able to do this?  Don't know.  It was never explained.  The main character (a bounty hunter) goes to Morocco street to find invisible thing that was killing people simply because you can find anything on Morocco street.  He encounter a couple of street venders who immediately tell him to go see a bean seller who just happens to be the guy who invented the invisible thing (It turns out to be Nanobot technology) that is killing people.  Instead of doing something reasonable like giving a sample of the Nanobots to the police, the government or a university the bean seller/inventor hands a sample over to the bounty hunter.  And it just goes on and on.  As if this isn't bad enough the main character gets into a jet for no apparent reason and flies off.  He is attacked by the military for not apparent reason.  Despite the fact that he is a bounty hunter his jet just happens to be capable of out flying three military fighters.  After causing the death of all three pilots (who for some reason never call for reinforcements) he doesn't get into any trouble.  This entire sequence was contrived simply to give the movie a dogfight.

Nobody underrates Rurouni Kenshin. It's in top lists everywhere :P. It triumphed for years on AnimeNfo back when it was actually used.

I have nothing to add to this topic. If anything I'd say Kaleido Star hasn't been seen enough.
