Twelve Kingdoms
« on: January 14, 2009, 05:49:58 AM »
I just watched all 45 episodes of it. It doesn't explain (or maybe I missed it) what exactly happened to Taiki, the black Kirin and his master. Does anyone know exactly what had happened? If I'm not mistaken, in the anime, it stated that the kingdom in which Taiki is Kirin of went into dark times. It doesn't explain any further than that.

There's more, a lot more, in the source novels, but that content never got animated.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

There is only 2 books (out of 7) which are not animated and one of those is a collection of short stories. The other one is about locating Taiki.

As I understand it at the time the anime was released there where more books planned so they decided to wait for those before doing the next part but no new books where written and it's now been 7 years since the last book so...

IIRC the series was supposed to be about 70 episodes, but for some reason they stopped at 45 without having anything properly wrapped up. Apparently, it's best to just stop at episode 39, the last episode of the last major arc.

...Of course, this is all just from what I've read. I'm currently about 13 episodes in to Twelve Kingdoms myself. ;D

I posted something like this as well before, and it seems that reason for the abrupt ending is that the author of the manga died.

I've seen that stated a couple times, however the author of the novels is still alive.  I don't see anything that says it was developed into a manga.

One thing to consider is that in the books it's more of a collection of stories taking place in the twelve kingdoms.
There is no overall storyline. Youko is just one of many main characters.

Btw it seems I was mistaken, a new Twelve Kingdoms story was actually released just last year.

This show is so awesome I had to buy on DVD yesterday when I went to Best Buy for a store meeting it was only $32 with my discount :D
I really recommend this show for people who haven't watched it yet.

I got about 10 episodes into this series and lost interest. I might of kept watching if it was a 26 episode series, but watching 45 episodes of an anime that is OK at best was a bit much.
Also I couldn't stand Sugimoto Yuka. If she died I would watch long enough to see that.

Then you left just as things were about to get good.
The story doesn't reach epic proportions till like 12-13

I loved the series and I always knew there was more, I just never ventured to find out if the Novels ever translated into english.  Does anybody know if they were?

Ugh....to each their own I guess.  I hated Twelve Kingdoms.  I can't believe I sat through all 45 episodes hoping it would get better but it didn't (at least they could have wrapped it up instead of just stopping).  All I remember was boring, weak characters that recycled the same dialogue every other episode.  I don't think I had anything else to watch so I forced it on myself.

I'll admit the first few episodes were good, pulled me in, but it lost me after that.

I'll agree past 30-32 I didnt know where the hell the story was going. I just thought it was absolutely pointless minor exposition considering the epic main themes and characters of the story

but it sure was good for the first 32~

The first 3 are available in English from Tokyo Pop.  There used to be various fan-translations floating around of some of them, but honestly it's been a few years since I followed any of them, so I couldn't say what their current status might be.

Eugenene Woodbury is doing one hell of a job translating the novels. He chooses a different sequence compared to the Tokyopop releases. You can read them on his site, or download the translations.
