Twelve Kingdoms
armitron:
I just watched all 45 episodes of it. It doesn't explain (or maybe I missed it) what exactly happened to Taiki, the black Kirin and his master. Does anyone know exactly what had happened? If I'm not mistaken, in the anime, it stated that the kingdom in which Taiki is Kirin of went into dark times. It doesn't explain any further than that.
Zalis116:
There's more, a lot more, in the source novels, but that content never got animated.
Mcgreag:
There is only 2 books (out of 7) which are not animated and one of those is a collection of short stories. The other one is about locating Taiki.
As I understand it at the time the anime was released there where more books planned so they decided to wait for those before doing the next part but no new books where written and it's now been 7 years since the last book so...
Finalizer:
IIRC the series was supposed to be about 70 episodes, but for some reason they stopped at 45 without having anything properly wrapped up. Apparently, it's best to just stop at episode 39, the last episode of the last major arc.
...Of course, this is all just from what I've read. I'm currently about 13 episodes in to Twelve Kingdoms myself. ;D
Reinvent:
I posted something like this as well before, and it seems that reason for the abrupt ending is that the author of the manga died.
