Fair enough.  I mean we have to accept that both have unbelievable aspects as far as the mecha are concerned. But as far as realism I mean that the Gundam universe (not every Gundam series for the hecklers) actually feels like it could one day fit into our history.  I mean just look at the IGLOO series.  The gundam series' are laced with an arms race much like our own.  Whereas Macross is laced with horomones and music.

I loved Macross 7 and Macross Plus. but to understand Macross better you have to watch it this order.

Zero
Macross Sage/ova
Plus
Macross 7/ova
Macross F

Also My fav Macross series would have to be Zero and Macross F. Zero reminds me of Gundam and Macross F was great for action scenes and music. The main reason why I like Macross F is because it tell you want happen Shin and other hero of the war and the music is second best in Macross series.

Macross 7 I would say has the best Music and soundtrack i have heard for the Macross Team. I was so happy to hear them playing the sound in Macross F!!!!!

I well say my one problem with Macross series is this.... They don't tell you what happens to past characters. There getting better at it but what Happen to the people on Macross 7 after they went back into space?

Gundam doesn't have that problem and i like gundam lot more but gundam need to add more to it races and need to go all-the-way down the rabbit hole. Don't just make Super-soldier make mutants or something!!!

at least the idea in macross frontier i dont remember enough of the others cuz i dont actively seek out macross or gundam shows. But the idea that we are looking for a new earth is totally plausible.
Both gundam and macross have the more or less WELL THE EARTH IS FUCKED AT LEAST THERE IS SPACE attitude.

I guess i just like the way macross does their love story mix with mech more then i enjoy gundams

because more or less they both tell the same basic story over and over i just think macross gets a bit more creative in telling the same story where as gundam just changes names

Preciate the Macross breakdown.  I plan to watch as much of those as I can in the next week so I can feel more confident in with my shit talking.  But in the meantime, I'm surprised as hell with all the support for Macross.  There's only like 3 Gundam ppl in here.  Never would I have thought we'd be the minority.

The more I think about the more I think it's an apples and oranges type question - aside from the essential mecha concept, there aren't that many parallels between the two, more to the point, they don't seem to be trying to imitate one another and can be enjoyed in entirely different ways.

Arguing realism in either seems stupid, I have to say. Gundam bends reality for the reason SF usually does, to make an analogy to the present, and far more simply because it's necessary to separate it from the present. Macross bends reality largely for stylistic reasons, it's an opera and an epic love story first and foremost, the SF elements exists to enable that.

I'm being generous when I say "bend".

THATS NOT TRUE!!!!! Gundam 00, Seed, Wing are great!!!!!! It just that those series are better then the old Macross story.

But when it comes down to Zero and Macross F there better then all old UC gundam series.

not counting Stardust 0083, 0080, MS 08, or Gundam Evolue.

Also Macross 7 titles with the other gundam series it little better then G gundam and worst then Gundam X

I've seen most of the Macross franchise, and a smattering of Gundam (mainly the U.C. stuff -- 0079, 0080, 0083, Zeta, F91, Char's Counterattack, V Gundam).  There are a lot of good things about both franchises, and both have a lot of pretty epic moments.  If I had to choose, though, I'd go with Macross.

Original Macross / Robotech rewrite - great story, iconic mecha designs, good character designs.  IMO, the original Macross music lacked the dramatic punch that the Robotech music had, but overall a true classic.

Macr 7 - I so wanted to hate this show when I first watched it, but it is just all flavors of awesome.  Everything about it is so ridiculous that I couldn't help but love it.  If the music wasn't upbeat rock, I probably wouldn't have liked this one half as much.

Macr Zero - I dug this one even though my roommate hated it...

Macr Plus - Great show, but it's been 10 years since I've seen it, so I barely remember it.

Macr Frontier - The end of the 1st episode really grabbed me.  Almost everything about this show really impressed me -- the animation style, the music, the mecha, the characters.

On the Gundam side, 0083 is the OVA I like to show new anime fans as an intro.  Kou may be whiney, but that's really the only bad thing I can say -- this is the way OVAs should be, IMO.

Zeta Gundam was pretty much the best war story I've seen in Gundam.  My roommate and I watched this over the course of about 2 months.  We spent a lot of time trying to guess which character was going to get killed off when, or who would switch sides, and so forth.  I think we spent more time cheering for the minor characters than we did for Camille, Char, or Amuro.

I'd have to say that Gundam has the better war stories, but I think the show gets too convoluted.  I'm definitely not interested in trying to make sense of the various alternate universes.  Macross is a lot easier to get into, and the music in the later series really adds to the enjoyment.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

I gotta say the more Macross I watch the more I starting to understand the overwhelming support for it as opposed to Gundam.  I'm still not completely convinced (Gundam still has better war stories).  But I wanna know whats the deal with Lover's Again?  I mean is it the only Macross that takes place in an alternate universe and is it worth seeing?  And can someone explain why SDF1 and DYRL are shown on the timeline as taking place in different times.

Macross II: Lovers Again is the only thing which takes place in an alternate universe because the original creators didn't really have anything to do with it.

DYRL is actually an in-universe movie made about SDF1 (Well, that's the explanation given.), which was made a few years after SDF ended.

Dont kno really.. I grew up on Macross, even had alot of the toys when I was a kid.. I like everything about Macross, even in the cheese areas as people say.. True Gundam has a typical better story but I just cant stand how the mechs look, no sex appeal at all... Where as in Macross the mechs more or less fit the pilot or became one with the pilot..

I always luv'd this one as I race bikes for almost 8 years..

What series is that bike type mech from?  Never seen it before.  It sorta reminds of Jake Rockwell's Wild Weasel from the Centurions  (which is pretty much the only American cartoon that can hold a candle to most Anime IMO).  YEA I SAID IT.  They should bring that show back for real though.

I haven't watched everything both have to offer, but I'd definitely have to go with Macross. More interesting storyline, musically inspired (which makes it stand out imo) and is a love story, which I'm a sucker for :P

I know that bike! It's from Robotech New Generation. Although it may have appeared in other Macross series that I still haven't watched yet.

Mechs have sex appeal?

I've always liked Mobile Suits and Armours, particularly the mono-eyes.

Valkyries are fine, they just aren't as memorable.

Gundam tries to sell itself as a real robot series, but inevitably, the main characters/villains will always wind up with some overpowered prototype that crushes all opposition. That's not to say I don't like them, my favourite model will always be the Deathscythe.

Macross has more uniform robots, perhaps that's why they don't seem as memorable (in the longer series anyway). Macross Plus and Zero were all about the prototypes. I still love the new VF-25 in Frontier, it looks so sleek, even with the extra weapon pods from the Super Pack.
