Books that could be made into anime? Easy: The Witcher Saga by A. Sapkowski. You don't even need to change anything, just port it directly: rich setting, realistic and non-cliche characters, great storyline, awesome dialogue. Pure win.

For another truly epic thing: The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. Another pure win.

The Heliconia series by Brian W. Aldiss sounds good.

Nevil Shute's On The Beach would make a great, if depressing, movie.

Ooooo~! I just realized...

Steven King's "Pulse" would make a fucking cool bloodbath OVA :)

Would'nt mind seeing a Stephen King's "Dark tower" series anime adaption. I agree with the earlier post that Asimov would be a good shout.

I wouldn't want to see any western book as an anime. The style just wouldn't match anything western.
The same way I don't want to watch any anime as a western movie.

Those two worlds should never cross.

if done right, it can work.

Anybody remember the show, Gankutsuou? Based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo? Man, was that a good anime or what

High five to anyone who remembers

Bit of a tangent, but what western books *have made* great (or not so great) anime?  In trying to introduce my sister to anime, I tried to have her watch Dear Daddy Long-Legs, which is based on one of her favorite books.  I thought they did a fairly OK job adapting it, but my sister couldn't get over the main character appearing to be significantly younger than in the book, and didn't like it at all.

Quite a late reply to your tangent but how about Gankutsuou? It's an anime version of the Count of Monte Cristo. With scifi elements and interesting visual style. They've also added the anime staple of flashbacks. The original book goes in chronological order, the anime starts from the middle and fills in details about the past later.

Would anyone laugh if there was a bible anime? Would anyone download it just to see how "bad" or "good" it was?

I wouldn't mind seeing the resident evil series as an anime. Or even those video game books such as Diablo or Starcraft. (But mainly resident evil)

I have not check back to this thread in a while and I'm glad people are still giving input about different books.  One I have not seen and think would make an excellent anime is the Dragons of Pern series. Simple story, but rich in colorful imagination.   Please keep adding things you'd like to see.

I think that most anime watchers have a vast reading pool.  Things like fantasy, Sci-fi, thrillers, horror, and or drama books that you think would be great as anime.  What would you like to see made into an anime that is not a manga.  List title and author because you might inspire someone to look it up and read something new.

David Eddings: The Belgariad story of a young man growing into unknown powers saving his world.
Eliabeth Haydon: Symphony of Ages kick ass, that simple.
Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time I'd like to see it after I find out how the story ends maybe.

I know that there are all kinds of licensing issues and copyright crap, but if all of that was taken care of and the Japanese invested a little more time into our literature what story would be you new kick ass anime. :o

OMG!!! Someone else knows of the Belgariad!!!! I thought I was the only one. Ever played the MUD based on the book?

The Gray King. I read it in the sixth grade and was the only book I liked for years.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Terry Brooks yet. Anything in the Shannara series would be a great Anime, especially the later books with airships, such as Voyage. Still one of my all-time favorite authors.

I'll second the Gunslinger series. Anime would be the only way to capture everything.

As for Western Anime, am I the only person that's seen Trigun? Western in the traditional sense? No. Set in a Western setting with lots of gunfights, lawlessness, cowboys, etc? Hell yeah.

I have not played any games based on The Belgariad, but I think I would have had i known.  Trigun based on gunslinger western style, and I would have to say that for Cowboy BeBop. Western adventure mixed with cool jazz...Yaah it rocked.

If they manage to pull it off the discworld series could be brilliant as a anime.
