Pirates on Trial
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:11:46 PM »
I'm sure most of you are already current with this, but I thought I'd put it up for discussion and comments.
The first day's proceedings.
They have a nice bus.
Flags, candy and courtroom twittering.
EPIC WINNING LOL.

This is a big thing over here as well it seems. I mean I found more articles about it on local newspaper then of the recent plane crash.

Anyway half of the charges are dropped, evidence are weak and there is one very important factor that lobbyists in USA have forgotten:

Sweden has for the latest 60 years been the biggest anti-USA country in western Europe. Just mentioning the raid on piratebay as a result from the pressure of companies based in USA will wake up nationalistic feelings of the jury members. That means if they make clear hints on why this case was brought up to begin with, they may indirectly make the jury feel that this is USA vs Sweden thing in which case they will not be found guilty.

Also this may be the breaking point for the Pirate party and all of it's supporters to press for less surveillance and more freedom on the internet. That is of course if they are found not guilty, which will be the result unless all jury members are bribed by the MPAA.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

The DMCA is one of the worst laws ever!

Do any of you remember this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_case_of_Sklyarov,_ElcomSoft,_Adobe,_and_the_DMCA

Adobe basically kidnapped this guy from his home country. How the F'ing hell does the US have any rights to do that!

And for Piratebay, they are only targeting them specifically because it has a catchy name that people will remember. Its a fear tactic.

Doesn't it say that he visited USA?

If there is a kidnapping, it must be that British dude that is sent to USA for trial because of a ridiculous agreement between US and UK. Now there must be some kind of violation.

And because all there warning letters were ridiculed? It is not a scare tactic because of a name, but because of the nation. The companies want to make example and send a message that you are not safe even outside of USA. However it will backfire because those retards don't understand that there will be a major consequence if they lose. This is not one of those cases where they harass random people whose names were found in a telephone catalogue.

The pirate bay has backing of Pirate Bureau, media (powerful thing these days in terms of politics) as well as the Pirate party and Carl Lundström who was funding them and is a rich entrepreneur... actually the only one having 2 lawyers in this trial, one being a specialist in copyright laws. What will happen when TPB will be found not guilty? It is not one of those "ok, you are free to go, we will all forget everything tomorrow. No, tomorrow all people will still be waving pirate flags and not only will the pirating activity increase, but general population will engage on a political level.

So this may very well be the first battle in a war "personal freedom vs internet control"

It would be sweet too if the jury also uses Pirate Bay to download the plaintifs movies.....
Not guilty your honor.... lol

I think it would increase even more if they were to be found guilty, not to mention protests, maybe demonstrations, and becouse it's that type of case - hackings and so on....

Statistically you are most likely correct in your first reply.

As for your second reply I can only imagine how much worse it would be. People would remember the raid, call it ministerstyre and there would be big political consequences.

I think they're releasing the audio broadcast online, but it's mostly in Swedish. TPB has asked for assistance in transcribing/summarising this audio into as many languages as possible over Twitter or blogs.

Swedish, well of course, that is perfect. Too bad I am too lazy to make subs for that...

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, are they asking over Twitter, or are they asking for people to transcribe a court case through Twitter?

I imagine it'd have to be a summery, but it's a pretty weird medium to describe a court case over either way.

The defendants are Twittering from inside the courtroom on mobile PCs. They're also asking people to keep the world up to date with the case via Twitter.

Peter said that after today’s proceedings they all went for some pizza, where they met the whole opposing side. He asked if they could pick up the check. “They refused,” he said.

Hahaha, priceless.

I am following the trial with great interest as I find it ridiculous. I mean, it would be very surprising if PB lost as they technically haven't done anything wrong...you can find torrents by doing a search on Google.

From Aftonbladet, a Swedish newspaper:

(Lawyer) "Nilsson: This type of torrent files that the prosecution refers to, are they possible to find on for example Google?

– Yes, absolutely, says Svartholm Warg."

If I weren't so lazy I would translate some stuff into English, but you guys seem to have the facts nailed down already.

If they're found guilty I'm going to start my own personal war against the US companies (read Facists).

YARRR!!
Hey Ho! And a bottle of rum!
I used to have an annoying sig, but somehow it got lost in translation, so now I just have this boring text instead....

There is one thing that just happened that is just as stupid as this trial. Hulu orders Boxee and TV.com to remove its content. The reason? Producers of course.
