The Perfect Ending?
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:30:02 PM »
After reading and watching alot of anime I've learned one major thing that upsets me in anime endings.

1. They defeat the final antagonist and everything is so called peaceful.

2.The story ends with no real conclusion.

3.The main character sort of disappears close to the end and somehow miraculously shows up again  >:( UTTER GARBAGE!!!

4. The ONE ENDING I HATE THE MOST is when you can't tell if the main character is dead or alive.

Honestly my perfect ending is a tragic ending. I prefer the bad guy to win or see the main character semi-broken.

Example: Death Note Ending was perfect lol.

So my question is what is your perfect ending? what do you like to see happening torwards the end as far as the character development

and conclusion.

Eh, I wasn't all that happy with the ending of Death Note, simply because of who was left standing :P

For me, a few different series have perfect endings. Cowboy Bebop, Bokurano, Witchblade and Basilisk... with Bokurano being the best of them all. It was sad, depressing, and at the same time heroic.

Yes, tragic endings are the best :D

As for Haruhi, I can agree with it being a good ending. I was satisfied. Most of the series is episodic, but the connecting episodes were enjoyable and didn't go against the grain of the more self contained ones. The ending also was a fairly open one which I think worked. Because it relied so heavily on events being encapsulated into single episodes I think it just facilitated more adventures with that ending.

Elfen Lied is my all-time favorite ending becuase it didn't answer anything.
It left everything open for you to decide...

Hmm. I thought about this for awhile and couldn't come to a conclusion. Only because some endings are better suited for certain genres then others. I thought of a few endings I liked but couldn't decide, because it would be like comparing architecture. For skyscrapers, I kinda like Empire state, for homes, I kinda like ranches, for office buildings, I prefer neo-modern.
So I will choose endings I liked, sorta based on genre.

Drama: Kanon 2006
Mind Fuck/Philosophy: Original Evangelion
Action/Sci-Fi: Death note
Comedy: Nodame Cantabile
Misc: Suzumiya Haruhi

Whereas the manga did answer some stuff unlike the anime where you sat at the end thinking "...wait? whut?"

I've been trying to get my sister into anime, and the first series I got her to watch all the way through was Hikaru no Go, and she said it ended perfectly (minus the special episodes, which had something of a tacked-on-after feel).  It's more in the coming-of-age genre, so not a tragic ending like OP likes, but Hikaru does come-of-age quite nicely.

Another couple w/ awesome endings, more in-line w/ the OP tragic endings likes, and Gungrave & Berserk.  Gungrave is all Mafia/Gangster/Zombies w/ themes of loyalty & friendship, and a kinda bittersweet tragic ending.  Berserk is unusual in that the anime doesn't cover near as much as the manga, but while most of the animes like that suck, the Berserk anime is better for it IMO.  The manga is still being written today, and has kinda the same we're-dragging-this-on-and-on-because-we're-popular-and-we-can feel that Bleach and Naruto have.  Although IMO the manga is much better than Bleach or Naruto, I would probably recommend just watching the anime & leaving it at that - although the ending does make you want to read the manga.

in my opinion, the best endings are those where it's somewhat unexpected, yet completely understandable and logical for that particular anime to progress. Like in Air,
(click to show/hide)
which is to be completely understandable, but a little unexpected.

An anime with a really good ending would have to be Solty Rei!

The endings to Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei were perfectly done.
El Cazador de la Bruja had a very good ending as well.

I like an ending I wouldn't expect to happen for example Code Geass, but some anime it just had to end with the good guys winning, like Gurren Lagann.  Cliffhangers aren't too bad if you really liked the anime, it would keep you wanting for more and thus watch the second season.  Cliffhangers w/o a next season is horrible though.. Did anyone finish the 2nd season of shanna? wtf was dat? I was hoping for some closure, but it left a wide ? in my head.  anyone care to explain? or is there a season 3, because i doubt that's how it's suppose to end..

I think this may tell you what type of person you are subconsciously.  Hate happy endings? Hate tragic endings?  Like End of the World endings? LOL.

I think any type of ending can be good as long as its consistent with the show.  I don't like the rushed or uncreative endings.  The ones where it seems like they are thinking...  "Well its over anyways, no point in making any extra effort for the ending."
