The cost of the higher end Mac Pro is nearly $1000 more than the base model, and most of it comes from the addition of a second processor (the rest is RAM.) Upgrading both processors at the same time adds a substantial amount to the cost (going from 2.26ghz to 2.93ghz adds $2600 to the cost.)

2xE5520= $800
MB: $400-500
Ram: 2x3x2GB= $200
GFX: $200

You'd only need to factor the difference, 3 more 1gb sticks, a single extra processor, and a new motherboard (minus the cost of the existing one). They both use the same video card. It comes pretty close, although their RAM is still expensive.

I assume the upgraded model processor is this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117180

So you do save some money upgrading to those, although it still leaves you with a $5000 machine with no monitor. =)

Apple is asking $3299.00 for the basic dual Xeon mac pro.
A machine that have twice the ram and a much, much better video card is roughly $2000 unless you want a fancy Lian-li aluminum case.

zherok:
Ah, I see where you're coming from now. As for a fancy aluminum case, I suspect that's part of the reason they cost so much. It helps explain how they manage to put so little into a Mac Mini and charge $600 for it anyway.
